Why are my puppy's legs shaking after jumping off furniture?

Hello I have a 10 weeks old working cocker spaniel female puppy. I got her at 9 weeks. She jumps off the couch quite alot and sometimes the bed.. even if i try to prevent it. She grew a good bit over the week and I can see that the shape of her front legs have changed a bit. When she sits it looks like her legs are shaking .. could her jumping off furniture so much have any effect on her front legs and cause any problems ? Thank you

Lily is adorable! Congratulations on your new puppy! I know how difficult it is to try to keep a puppy from being crazy. I certainly cannot guarantee that she won't hurt herself jumping off something, but our biggest concerns for puppies are repetitive pounding (such as running on concrete for long distances) damaging the growth plates and jumping down from unreasonable distances (such as off the deck). Relatively small jumps (such as from the bed or couch) are less likely to be a problem. The changes you are noticing in her legs are likely due to her growing so quickly which can make their legs look abnormal. The shaking can be from muscle fatigue if it is occurring after she has been active. If you notice any limping or an abnormal gait, I would recommend having her evaluated by your veterinarian. Otherwise, continue to try to train her be kind to her body, but know that she is a puppy and there is a limit as to what we can control. Good luck! And congrats again on your addition!

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Mooska! If she is now bearing full weight, is eating and drinking hopefully she just sprained or strained that left paw. The shaking could be some residual discomfort. I would rest her for several days (no running, jumping, playing rough) and see if the shaking stops. If it persists I'd have your Vet take a look. My puppy fell off bed, limping, lethargic, shaking. Should I call vet?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. So if he is limping, he is in pain. Shaking is another sign of pain. The question is how much pain and why? Is it a minor, short-lived pain like when you stub your toe? A sprain? Or did he break a bone? The only way to know is to see an emergency vet and take some x-rays. That being said, in most of these cases, they shake it off and are walking normally within a few hours. If he seems OK to you, it is completely reasonable to let him sleep tonight and if he is not himself by morning, then see the vet first thing. If he is worrying you or any other signs arise, you always have the option of heading to the emergency vet tonight. Under no circumstances do I recommend any human pain medication - most are unsafe in dogs. However, if you want to do something for pain, ice can be a tremendous help. Applying an ice pack (wrapped in a thin kitchen towel or paper towel) to the leg for 5 minutes every 4-8 hours is great for inflammation and pain. Best wishes to you and Uno!

Is my puppy's jumping and stair climbing bad for her joints?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! In general, I'm not concerned about an otherwise healthy puppy doing stairs and small jumps. If the couch is particularly high, try to discourage this but otherwise I'm not terribly worried. That being said, I do occasionally see puppies who land too hard from a jump and are now limping with an apparent strain or sprain. Usually, a few days of rest and pain medication is all that is needed but it can still be scary. Of course, if there is an underlying problem, Coco would need to be more careful. Why does my puppy's leg tremble when he's sitting or lying down?

If you have done a thorough check of his leg and are finding nothing wrong with Chief and he is walking on the leg just fine, I would monitor this for now. I have seen this in quite a few puppies and when I examined the puppy further, I found nothing wrong and it resolved on its own. If Chief begins to show signs of pain / discomfort, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. It looks like Chief is about 12 weeks of age, so at this age he still needs to go through the remainder of his puppy vaccinations. At his next vaccination appointment, I would discuss this further with the examining veterinarian. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. My puppy fell off the couch, now limping on her back leg. What to do?

Given her age, she should be physically examined by your veterinarian. X-rays may be indicated to rule out fractures. Restrict her activity to just leash walks for elimination. Avoid excessive running, jumping or rough play. Do not medicate her as many OTC drugs cannot be used in puppies or may be toxic to dogs.

Why is my Pomeranian shaking and acting off after a couch jump?

A very common cause of shaking and acting "off" in dogs is neck or back pain, often due to a pinched nerve or herniated disc. This could have occurred when Faizy jumped off the couch today. Or, she could have abdominal pain, or some other type of injury that isn't visible from the outside. If she is eating and drinking normally and acting okay otherwise, you could opt to restrict her exercise tonight and monitor her to see if the problem resolves by morning. If not, I would recommend taking her to the vet tomorrow for an exam - he/she can do x-rays or other testing if needed to help determine the problem and get her started on appropriate treatment.

Is my puppy sleeping on the hard floor or humping bad for her bones?

Congratulations on your new dog! It is possible that Coco is feeling too warm for her comfort level and therefore prefers to sleep on the cooler floor. Some dogs just have this preference. The only time it can be concerning is in larger breed heavy dogs they can develop what is called a hygroma of the elbow where they develop a fluid filled pocket due to the pressure on the thin skin near the elbow. The humping behavior you describe shouldn't cause any issues with her legs/joints and can be common in young dogs. Sniffing or licking the floor after cleaning should not cause her issues but to be safe you can follow your cleanup with a wipe of a cloth in plain water to remove soapy residue.
