My puppy jumped and landed hard. What signs of injury to watch for?

Luckily puppies are very flexible and rarely get injured like adult dogs. Oliver may be sore tomorrow and if there is a problem it should show up by then. If he is otherwise doing well without limping, I think it would be ok to monitor him for now. However, if he develops a limp or any other signs such as crying in pain, inappetence or continued lethargy, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They will yelp and whine when something is painful enough. The fact that she didn't do this is a good sign that she did not hurt herself too bad. I would not expect any broken bones or torn soft tissue from a fall at this height, but it's good to watch for any signs of a significant injury. Signs of a broken bone would be swelling and a great deal of pain. With a broken bone in the leg, they will limp and not put any weight on the limb. With a broken jaw, they often hold their mouth open and do not want to eat or drink. Less severe injuries will result in less severe immobility, but should be seen by a vet if the signs of injury last longer than 24 hours. In order to comment on the curved joint, I would need to evaluate her in- person. However, this is a good question to ask your vet the next time she goes for an exam. Purebreeds are more likely to have skeletal abnormalities and it's possible that this is a fixable problem. It's also possible that this is normal for her breed. I'm so sorry Gemma had that experience today. How scary for her! Since Gemma is still growing, I would watch her closely for any lameness. Growing dogs can damage their growth plates and will have long term problems if not treated. So, if there is any lameness, I would recommend having her evaluated by your veterinarian. My only other worry would be if she hurt her abdomen in the fall. If she is not eating normally, seems lethargic or doesn't want to move around normally, I would also have her evaluated by your veterinarian. I hope that answers your question.

Puppies can heal quickly so please feel the leg and as long as it feels normal and he doesn’t cry then you can give him a few days to recover. I’d keep him quiet and take him out for potty breaks only for a day or two. If he’s still lame then you’ll need a veterinary exam to determine the cause.
