My 10-week-old puppy holds pee for 12 hours. Is this normal?

Hello. Jack Jack should definitely not be urinating every 30 minutes. This could be a physical problem, or he has some kind of psychological issue, especially if he is drinking more than a normal amount of water. I think it would be a good idea to see if his kidneys are OK & that he does not have any other issues with holding his urine. At the very least, he should be able to hold his urine a minimum of 4-6 hours at this age. Hopefully, he will be fine & he will outgrow this behavior, but I would recommend making sure there is not a medical reason for such frequent outings. Look how cute Tandy is! Yes, 13 hours is too long to expect her to hold her bladder, she shouldn't be expected to hold it longer than eight hours at most. I'd see if there is someone you can hire to come over to let her out once during the night, or if you can swing home to do it. I hope this helps!

It does sound like Bella was holding it in the whole time, and six hours is too long to leave a three month old puppy without a potty break. She needs to be let out to go potty at least once every three hours. You can still put her in the crate while you are gone, but I would come back if you can every three hours to let her out, or you can hire someone to let her out every three hours. As she grows, she won't need to be let out every three hours, and by the time she is six months old, she could hold it for up to six hours, so having someone come by is only a short term thing. Crate training is an effective way to potty train a dog, and I do recommend it. I will give you my method for potty training Bella when you are home with her: Start by keeping your puppy on a regular feeding schedule, and taking away her food between meals. Take her out to potty first thing every morning, and once every 30 minutes to an hour. Always make sure she goes out after meals, first thing when she wakes up from a nap, last thing before bedtime at night, and right before you leave the house. Take her to the same spot each time to go potty. Her scent there will encourage her to go. Stay with her outside each time she goes to potty, at least until she is fully house trained. When she goes outside, praise her and give her a treat. I hope this all helps :-)

You can reasonably expect a puppy to hold its bladder and bowels for as many hours as they are months old. Keep your puppy on a consistent daily feeding schedule and remove food between meals. Keep the puppy on a consistent schedule. Puppies should be taken out every hour, as well as shortly after meals, play and naps. All puppies should go out first thing in the morning, last thing at night and before being confined or left alone. Know where your puppy is inside at all times. Watch for early signs that he needs to eliminate so you can prevent accidents. These signs include pacing, whining, circling, sniffing or leaving the room. If you see any of these, take your puppy outside as quickly as possible. If you can’t watch your puppy, he must be confined to a crate or a small room, door closed or with a baby gate. Gradually give more freedom, starting with a small area, and gradually increase it. If he eliminates outside, give him some free time in the house (about 15 to 20 minutes to start), and then put him back in his crate or small room. If all goes well, gradually increase the amount of time he can spend out of confinement. Accompany your puppy outside and reward him whenever he eliminates outdoors with praise, treats, or play. Take your puppy to the same place each time because the smells often prompt puppies to eliminate. If you catch your puppy in the act of eliminating inside, clap sharply twice, just enough to startle but not scare him. Immediately run with him outside, encouraging him to come with you the whole way. Allow your pup to finish eliminating outside, and then reward him with happy praise and a treat. If he has nothing to eliminate when he gets outside, don’t worry. Just be more watchful of him inside. If your puppy has an accident but you don’t catch him in the act and only find the accident afterward, do not punish him. He cannot connect the punishment with something he did minutes, let alone hours ago.

It will take time to fully train Tank. If he is only 2 months old he can really only hold his urine for about 3 hours. If he starts to whine in his crate at night I would recommend walking him when he starts to whine. When you take him outside I would recommend walking him on a leash. This is because puppies are easily distracted. Once he urinates +/- defecates he can have off leash time in the backyard. With crate training remember anytime you cannot have your eyes on him 100% of the time he should be in the crate. Also if you take Tank outside and he doesn't go to the bathroom I always recommend putting Tank back in the crate for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes take Tank back outside to try again. It takes time and patience to train a puppy, but if you are consistent it will pay off. Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I wouldn't withhold water from Chester as this could lead to dehydration in a young puppy. His drinking and urinating sound like it may be normal for a puppy his age but to be entirely sure you may want to take home to a veterinarian to have his urine checked. A puppy his age cannot hold his urine very long so I suspect he is having accidents because he physically cannot hold it that long.
