My 10-week puppy is hacking and sick. Why isn't Benadryl helping?

I believe it might actually be part of the original allergic reaction but as there is suspicion he had a reaction to the Benadryl i wouldn't recommend giving it again. instead i would recommend to monitor him, give it 48 hours, if it is not resolved bring him back to the vet for a steroid shot.

Allergies are a possibility along with the start of a respiratory infection. You can give Benadryl to dogs and at his weight it would be closer to a whole 25 mg tablet instead of a 1/4. I would say get him checked if the symptoms continue or you notice them progress

This is likely just from stress and allergies but could the beginning stages of an upper respiratory infection. I would start with some benadryl twice a day. See link below. If he isn't improving or gets worse, I would have your vet take a look at him to make sure he doesn't need any antibiotics. Keep a close eye on him since he is so young and small. Make sure he is eating and drinking and acting normal. I hope this helps!

Hello. Benadryl will not help the runny nose in your puppy as she may have a mild upper respiratory infection. If she is eating & drinking well, playful & active, this will probably resolve on its own. The itchy skin might be from fleas, or mites. Make sure you are treating her with an age appropriate flea product & if she continues to itch, I would dip her once a week in a Lime Sulfur product that you can purchase on-line or at most Tractor Supply stores. This would be much better than Benadryl. If the nasal discharge turns thick or your puppy seems unwell, please see your veterinarian as soon as possible. Poor puppy. These symptoms of being wobbly, with no associated vomiting or diarrhea, don't necessarily mean he got into a poison. Typically there are some GI symptoms (vomiting, diarrhea) when a pet ingests something they shouldn't have. There could be an internal problem going on or a primary neurological condition. Also a possibility is an adverse reaction to a recent topical flea product or heartworm medication. The Benadryl will likely make him a bit sleepy, so don't be alarmed if you see that. I would consider taking him to your ER vet for further testing, if there is no immediate suspicion for his symptoms, because treating the underlying problem right away is our primary goal here, so that we can hopefully reverse the neurological symptoms before they cause permanent damage. Poor Benzo! Sometimes after they have diarrhea it takes a little while to build up a full bowel movement so he could be straining simply because he has the urgency to go but there isn’t much there. On the other hand, with the hair he could be constipated. Either way fiber will be beneficial. You can give him 1/4 teaspoon of canned pumpkin twice a day to help balance his GI tract. If the chicken and rice, has any chicken broth or water in it then that could be why he is having decrease water consumption. If not, you could certainly add some water to his meal to help him drink more water. I am concerned that he is more lethargic. Since he is so small, I would have your vet take a look at him to assess his hydration and make sure he doesn’t have any parasites or anything more serious going on like parvo. Your vet will be able to give him some fluids if needed and prescribe his some medicine to help make him feel better. I hope this helps and he feels better really soon.

Poor Knox. I am so sorry he is going through that. What exactly is happening at night that is harder for him? I would not add Benadryl to the mix. It sounds like he is on some good pain control medications. Make sure that he is eating small more frequent amounts rather than just two big meals and that it's something more blend for him as he's recovering. If you feel so he is not doing well at night, I would call your veterinarian first thing in the morning or take him to the ER if you do feel as though he is in pain.
