Can I give my puppy Benadryl for nighttime pain after surgery?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 28 days old | 30 lbs

My 7 month old puppy is 4 days post op for a blockage. He is recovering slowly and the incision looks good, but he seems to be suffering more at night. Can we add benedryl to his medications? He is taking Rimadyl, Gabapentin and Carenia. He is eating and drinking well.

Poor Knox. I am so sorry he is going through that. What exactly is happening at night that is harder for him? I would not add Benadryl to the mix. It sounds like he is on some good pain control medications. Make sure that he is eating small more frequent amounts rather than just two big meals and that it's something more blend for him as he's recovering. If you feel so he is not doing well at night, I would call your veterinarian first thing in the morning or take him to the ER if you do feel as though he is in pain. Good luck and I hope he feels better soon
