Can I give my puppy Benadryl for nighttime pain after surgery?

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 28 days old | 30 lbs

My 7 month old puppy is 4 days post op for a blockage. He is recovering slowly and the incision looks good, but he seems to be suffering more at night. Can we add benedryl to his medications? He is taking Rimadyl, Gabapentin and Carenia. He is eating and drinking well.

Poor Knox. I am so sorry he is going through that. What exactly is happening at night that is harder for him? I would not add Benadryl to the mix. It sounds like he is on some good pain control medications. Make sure that he is eating small more frequent amounts rather than just two big meals and that it's something more blend for him as he's recovering. If you feel so he is not doing well at night, I would call your veterinarian first thing in the morning or take him to the ER if you do feel as though he is in pain. I do not recommend giving the Benadryl, because it may be dangerous in his case and likely won't be helpful. He will eventually sleep and start to act more normally this evening. Benadryl doesn’t usually make dogs very sleepy, but you could try it. I would do your best to keep the paw covered or have her wear the cone while you give her lots of reassurance. It can take a few days for them to adapt to the change in sight and hearing while wearing the cone, but after that they should go on like normal. I would also talk to your vet about other sedative options to be used as needed.

What helps a teething puppy's discomfort? Is Benadryl safe for them?

Benadryl won't help whatsoever so there is absolutely no indication to give it in this case, i would not recommend trying to medicate your puppy for teething, all dogs go through this and although it can be uncomfortable it's usually not painful top the point of giving pain killers. just a reminder as well, all human pain killers are potentially very toxic to dogs.

My puppy is sore after vaccination. Can I give him Tylenol for pain?

Please do not give your puppy tylenol or any other human OTC medicine, as it can cause irreversible liver and kidney damage and gastric bleeding. He is probably a bit sore from the injection. The Benadryl will not take this soreness, but will likely make him tired. Don;t touch him, just let him stay in his bed and sleep and by tomorrow the pain will likely be gone. If not, you can get some pain medicine from your vet.

My puppy is restless, scratching after Benadryl. What should I do?

I believe it might actually be part of the original allergic reaction but as there is suspicion he had a reaction to the Benadryl i wouldn't recommend giving it again. instead i would recommend to monitor him, give it 48 hours, if it is not resolved bring him back to the vet for a steroid shot.

Benadryl is fine and safe to give however if she isn’t calmer out of her kennel you can let out when you are there to supervise her. As long as she is. It running around playing fetch and chasing things or jumping up and down a bunch, then she will be fine. Benadryl can be given twice a day safely and 25 mg is appropriate

My 10-week puppy is hacking and sick. Why isn't Benadryl helping?

Your puppy is so cute! I'd give the vet a call back to make an appointment for him. It could be he has a respiratory infection causing his hacking, in which case Benadryl won't help. I wouldn't be too worried he had a smaller than usual bowel movement and hasn't had one since. Sometimes the bowel movements can be smaller, and it's good he's gone at least once today. Give the vet a call back to have him seen. Best of luck.
