My puppy is wobbly, sleepy, and won't eat. Should I see a vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Shetland Sheepdog | Male | unneutered | 10 months and 29 days old | 35 lbs

my 11 month old shetland sheep dog. within the last 2 hours had gone from playful to sleepy and wobbly. he will eat but not his usual "will eat anything at anytime self" i gave him some syrup about 5cc and 1 25mg benadryl . and been pushing water. i cant see any way he would have gotten any thing poison . only possible could have eaten a kid toy or somethng he stole off the grandchilds bedroom floor. but i cant think of anything that would cause symptoms do fast

Poor puppy. These symptoms of being wobbly, with no associated vomiting or diarrhea, don't necessarily mean he got into a poison. Typically there are some GI symptoms (vomiting, diarrhea) when a pet ingests something they shouldn't have. There could be an internal problem going on or a primary neurological condition. Also a possibility is an adverse reaction to a recent topical flea product or heartworm medication.
The Benadryl will likely make him a bit sleepy, so don't be alarmed if you see that. I would consider taking him to your ER vet for further testing, if there is no immediate suspicion for his symptoms, because treating the underlying problem right away is our primary goal here, so that we can hopefully reverse the neurological symptoms before they cause permanent damage.

So, potential serious concerns would be 1. poisoning (ie antifreeze, pot, chemicals, rotten carcasses, etc.) 2. seizures (dogs get epilepsy and it commonly presents in puppies 3. metabolic issue like a liver shunt can cause neurologic symptoms 4. trauma to the brain like being hit by a car. Any neurologic symptoms are very serious and I would take him to an emergency veterinarian for a full workup.

It may be that he has a neurologic disease, or (especially if he's older) he may a tumor which has started to cause some internal bleeding. Though his gums are pink, this is still possible. Is there any chance he got into something in terms of a possible toxin? If he will get up and walk to you, and he responds to his name each time, and will eat and drink; it is reasonable to wait until morning if you don't have a vet emergency center near you. If he is unable to rise on his own, if he won't respond to his name, if he's vomiting, seems painful, or if he seems to be getting worse at all, please seek an emergency veterinarian. Sounds like Ori may have low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) but that is not common in this size or age of puppy. I suggest you give a bit of Karo syrup or honey by mouth (just a teaspoon or two). If no improvement within 15 minutes of giving him that then he needs to see a vet ASAP.

Is my 2-month-old puppy's wobbliness and eating habits normal?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Puppies, just like kids, have different interests in food. Some will eat all the time, and others don't care as much. As long as he isn't too thin and is having normal poops, then just let him eat when he wants and don't worry too much about it. Puppies do sleep a lot so that is normal. In terms of him being wobbly, or off balance, this is definitely not normal. I would strongly recommend getting a video of the wobbliness and bring this to your vet to show them. It could be just puppy behaviour, however true 'ataxia' (wobbliness and off balance) is a concern, vs. just a clumsy puppy. This could indicate a congenital malformation in his brain, neck or spine, or possibly liver. Best of luck with Zeus!

He may have just been exhausted from the swim. In that case though, his symptoms would resolve rapidly with rest. Otherwise I worry there is something more serious going on with him. Poisonings are a common cause of a rapid onset of the sign you have described. Good luck!
