My 8-week puppy fought a mouse; now weak, drooling. What's wrong?

I am concerned that your puppy is quite sick. There are a number of things that can cause this, but the first things I am concerned about are 1) infection, 2) hypoglycemia and 3)parasites. I would want to ensure that she is not septic which can cause secondary hypoglycemia. It would be best if he was seen by a veterinarian.

My biggest concern in a very young puppy with the signs you described is that she has a low blood sugar. This can worsen to the point of seizures and can be fatal if not treated. If she will not eat, then I would recommend rubbing Karo syrup or maple syrup on her gums and taking her to a veterinarian immediately. Hi and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. There are many causes of vomiting and diarrhea, especially in a puppy. Certainly the mouse could have caused an upset stomach; however there are some other causes of vomiting and diarrhea. Some potential causes are intestinal parasites, Parvovirus, toxicity or even a foreign body. Since Josie is vomiting, lethargic and is very young I would recommend being evaluated by a local vet for a physical exam where they may recommend x-rays, fecal exam and/or Parvovirus test. That's good that you got the mouse out of her mouth so quickly. Mice typically transmit worms, fleas/ticks and they can transmit leptospirosis and other bacteria depending on the local prevalence. I recommend to make sure Callie is up to date on her flea, heartworm and intestinal parasite prevention. Then call your veterinarian and tell them what happened. They will know if there are any bacterial infections in your region of concern and will recommend preventive treatment if needed. Poor Pickle! I'm so sorry that this happened - it's easy to lose track of tiny puppies like this and accidentally injure them. Unfortunately, it sounds like Pickle may be very seriously hurt. I would recommend taking him to an emergency vet immediately for the best chance of saving his life - he may need x-rays to help determine what his injuries are, as well as IV fluids and other supportive care. If going to the vet is not an option, then all you can do at home is keep him warm and comfortable and hope for the best. You can try offering a small amount of food and water if he seems willing to eat, and monitor him closely for the next 24 hours to see if things improve.

Make sure the ingested animal did not die from rodenticide. If so, it is possible your puppy will suffer secondary exposure and may require veterinary attention. If not, monitor for vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or lethargy. See your vet if you notice any of these signs.

I would keep an eye on Abby for signs of any distress or illness such as vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea, etc which would warrant a trip to the ER vet. As mice can also carry parasites, scheduling a vet visit when you can and getting Abby up to date on dewormings, etc can help prevent future illness.
