My puppy has a fluid-filled bump on its stomach. What could it be?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 17 days old | 5 lbs

I have a 7 week old puppy that has what looks like a fluid filled cyst on her stomach. Any ideas of what it could be?

Hello, that looks like it could either be a local reaction to something like a bug bite. Other causes such as sterile abscess or cyst from a hair follicle or skin glands can also cause this. If it is painful or is continues to grow in the next couple of hours then I would have it evaluated by a veterinarian today.

Otherwise, you can apply an ice pack or bag of frozen peas wrapped in a thin cloth over the area to see if the swelling decreases. If if doesn't or if is worse by the morning then you should have it assessed by you veterinarian tomorrow.

It could be a cyst, an abscess or even a tumor, i would recommend taking Chip to the vet in order to get it checked, if it is a cyst it will only need drainage, if it's an abscess it will require antibiotic treatment.

It appears to be a cyst. I would not worry about it too much. Just keep the area clean and apply a thin layer of Neosporin or other topical antibiotic ointment on it to prevent infection. DO NOT use hydrogen peroxide on it - that will delay healing.

If it comes back or does not go completely away you should probably take Piper to your vet for an exam.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. This could have also being a cyst or an abscess based on your description. There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point. I recommend you have Aili valuated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!

It's likely an infection under the skin. This happens more commonly in puppies and can be treated effectively by a veterinarian. It's also possible that this is a benign growth, but much less likely. It's best to have a veterinarian examine her, because this may need to be drained. It's also possible that something is stuck under the skin, which is causing the inflammation and infection. For now it's best to hold a warm compress over the bump for 15 minutes twice a day. Do this by soaking a cloth in warm salt water and applying it the the bump. Avoid pressing or poking the bump. Unfortunately, Spot really should be seen by a veterinarian. If it is an abscess, that is one serious infection that needs to be addressed. It could also be a severe hernia. The swelling may be caused by loops of bowel that have slipped through a defect in the muscle wall. This will require surgery to repair. If left untreated, it is possible the bowel could become twisted or strangulated which would be an emergency and potentially life threatening.

Hello, Thanks for the good picture. I agree that it does look like a solitary pimple, very well could be from an insect sting initially. I would just monitor this for now. If it spreads into many pimples, a larger sore, or an itchy rash, those would be reasons to have him seen by his veterinarian to ensure he doesn't have a skin infection that requires treatment. You can use a warm compress with saline or epsom salt water on the area for a few minutes twice per day. Otherwise, don't apply any ointments and just let it stay dry and open to air.
