When can my puppy start flea and tick prevention? What age is safe?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! We don’t start heartworm and flea/tick prevention until around 8 week of age. Nexgard is the only oral flea and tick preventative approved in the US for 6 months or younger. I would continue the Nemex every 2 weeks until they start heartworm prevention. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You can take her outside. There is a fine line between socializing and preventing her from contracting a contagious disease. Walks outside are fine. No dog parks, no playing with dogs that are not vaccinated, etc. She is old enough for Nexgard, Revolution and Frontline for fleas and ticks. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Frontline a topical flea medication and is safe for puppies 8 weeks or older and comes in a 0-22 lb size. Revolution, also a topical, is safe for puppies 6 weeks or older and has a size for under 5 lbs. Personally for a puppy Max's size I would bath in Dawn and manually remove the fleas. If that doesn't solve the problem then I would use Revolution until he weighs more. Also make sure you treat ALL other pets in the house. Once Max gets over 5 lbs there are a lot more option. I really like Nexgard, which is labeled for 4 lbs and up, and as young as 8 weeks. It should be available from most vets. Hope this helps! It depends on the medication. Revolution can be given to puppies as young as six weeks of age, Advantage seven weeks of age, and Frontline Plus eight weeks of age. Frontline spray can be used in puppies as young as two days old. I hope this helps!

I would recommend starting Flea and tick prevention now. If you use a collar I would recommend the Seresto collar. If you didn't want the collar than using a pill is typically the best for dogs. I don't see a lot of fleas and/or ticks when people use those products instead of topical. You can use Bravecto, Nexguard or Simparica. Where there is one tick, there could be more. Any time you go outside with Max, he needs to be checked thoroughly for ticks. If he is over 7 weeks old, a Seresto flea and tick collar is safe, just make sure he can't chew on it! You can also purchase Frontline spray - spray a small amount on a towel and use the towel to wipe down Max.
