Poor puppy. Yes open mouth breathing and raspy breaths indicates that puppy is not getting enough oxygen, which can be due to either fluid in the lungs, congestion in the upper nasal passage or some other birth defect. I would recommend having this puppy examined by your vet soon! I do hope that your pup has a mild issue that can be treated for. Best of luck and take care.

Puppies do breathe a bit faster while asleep than adult dogs. An occasional sneeze or nasal drip is fine. Monitor for lethargy, decreased appetite, difficulty breathing or a yellow or green nasal discharge. See your veterinarian for an exam if any of these symptoms develop.

I would recommend counting Bella's respiratory rate when she is completely asleep - if she is tachypneic because of respiratory or cardiac disease it should continue during sleep. If her respiratory rate is less than 30 when she is sleeping the rapid breathing is probably behavioral. If her sleeping respiratory rate is over 30 (it is important that she is in deep sleep), or if she starts coughing or has an increase in effort when breathing you should see a vet right away.

Hi there and thanks for posting! Sounds like the puppy may have a upper respiratory infection or a virus or bacterial. Not consuming enough of mom's milk can cause the puppy not to receive enough antibodies towards certain infections. However, this can vary depending on the mother's own natural immunity. 320 grams or 0.7lbs for a 1 week old puppy sounds about right. I hope the antibiotics helps with the respiratory infection. I would recommend bringing Pippa to a veterinarian especially if she is coughing and breathing hard. She may have an upper respiratory infection but could also be something more. Your veterinarian can listen to her to make sure her lungs are clear and if not can perform x-rays to make sure she doesn't have pneumonia or bronchitis. Congrats on your new puppy! You didn't post a lot of information about Bella but I will help as best I can. Young puppies breathe more rapidly than older dogs, even when sleeping. If you hear any congestion or see any discharge from her eyes or nose, I would recommend having her seen by a vet. Young puppies have a weak immune system so they are susceptible to upper respiratory infections. If you need to know how to pick her up, I would recommend looping your arm under her front limbs and use your other arm to scoop behind her rear limbs, then lift. This will balance her weight evenly. This sign could be compatible with an upper respiratory tract inflammation/infection.
