My 3-month-old puppy has an eye infection. Is more treatment needed?

This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. However, there are some other diseases that really need a very thorough evaluation of the eye to diagnose. I think that if he has not improved on the current therapy, it may be a good idea to check in with your veterinarian. If they are concerned based on their knowledge of his case, they could consider having you consult with a veterinary ophthalmologist. Hi and thanks for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You will need to see your veterinarian for an ocular exam to determine if there is a foreign body in the eye. The antibiotic that would be efficacious towards Klebsiella would be a ophthalmic solution that contains tobramycin or gentamicin. Best of luck!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Oakley. No, it is not normal for an eye infection to continue for so long in a puppy. I would recommend he has eye tests done or repeated as his condition is not resolving. I typically stain both eyes to look for a scratch on the surface, take a swab to look at under the microscope, and then measure the pressure and tear production in each eye. Care should also be taken to see if there is an eyelash contacting the surface of his causing chronic irritation. His eyes can also be numbed and checked for a foreign body under the third eyelids. It appears that there is a severe corneal ulcer on the left eye but hard to say for sure for the right eye. The ulcer appears to be a melting ulcer, which is quite severe. These eyes need the care of an eye specialist and further treatment. Many times, drops alone won't be enough to treat the eye. I would consult with a veterinary ophthalmologist so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made.

I'm very concerned that he is scratching his eye, and he could really damage it with his claws. I also see in the pictures that he's holding his eye closed, which suggests his eye is painful. I would not put anything in his eye without having him seen by a vet. Any eye problem is an emergency because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Please take him into a vet immediately. Baytril (Enrofloxacin) does have the potential to stunt growth or cause joint abnormalities with the cartilage if given in pets younger than 8 months of age. I would not expect these changes to occur with such a short dosage; however, I would recommend expressing your concerns to your veterinarian and getting them on an alternative medication. The whole class of Fluoroquinolone drugs are not recommended for pets under 8 months of age unless they are absolutely necessary. Best of luck with your pet Presto and take care!
