Why does my puppy's eye infection keep coming back after treatment?

Hi Jade! Loal is adorable and I'm sorry to hear that she's had so many eye issues lately. Conjunctivitis means that Loal has inflammation of the conjunctiva tissue within the eye, yet this inflammation can be the result of a number of underlying causes, including bacterial, parasitic, foreign material, viral, among others. Loal's eyes should be thoroughly examined with fluorescein staining prior to starting any medication, so I do not recommend attempting to treat her eyes on your own. Additionally, there are no safe or effective over the counter medications to manage conjunctivitis. I can understand that the cost can add up quickly, but this is the safest and most effective way to help Loal. I hope that all goes well!

I'd recommend contacting your veterinarian to discuss what other tests might be recommended. It may be that Bella has a resistant infection, allergy or autoimmune disease. If your vet isn't sure about the next step you could also ask about referral to an ophthalmologist who would be able to do a thorough evaluation. I would recommend stopping any home remedies as many essential oils can harm the sensitive eye.

I would perhaps give it a few more days if the discharge is not green or yellow. Wipe the eyes clean several times daily. If the discharge does become green or yellow, if Oakley starts rubbing his eyes or squinting more than usual, if the whites of his eyes are looking red or if his eyes look cloudy then a trip to the vet is in order. If he develops any respiratory signs (nasal discharge, cough, sneeze, trouble breathing), then an exam is needed. Best of luck to you and Oakley!

Although a picture would be essential to determine clinical development, if you think there is no improvement at all, I would recommend to have it checked again immediately. Certain type of corneal ulcers can actually start melting and get worse very rapidly. Different type of antibiotics or treatment may be needed. I am sorry to hear about your dog! I think you need to recheck with your vet if the initial treatment is not working. Your vet may need to do some additional testing such as a culture of the eye if infection is still a concern or testing of tear production. A different eye medication may be needed to treat this condition.

This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. Since Toby has not improved on his medications, I highly recommend that you have Toby reevaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They can attempt a different course of therapy or possibly refer you to an eye specialist. Further therapy would be based on the findings. Good luck and best wishes!
