Puppy ear infection: Head tilt after vet visit, is it serious?

I am sorry that Bella is not feeling well! It is certainly possible that her head tilt is being caused by an ear infection. Ear infections have 2 main culprits - bacteria and yeast and sometimes both. And sometimes there can be different types of bacteria as well! If Bella does have an ear infection, it is possible that the organisms are different than last year and the medicines would be ineffective. A good veterinary exam will determine if the ear is causing Bella to walk around with her head tilted and what the best treatment would be. Unfortunately if he won't let you near his ears you may have to wait until tomorrow when you can get Wrigley in to see your veterinarian. If you can pick up an ear cleaner from a pet store you can try flushing them out between now and tomorrow morning. If he is walking with a head tilt I would be worried that his inner or middle ear may also be affected, if this is truly the case, I wouldn't recommend putting anything more in his ears until you see your vet. If you feel he is really uncomfortable and you don't want to wait, an emergency vet should be able to evaluate him today.

Middle ear infection would be the most common cause for these symptoms at this age, but there is a small chance that it could be a brain condition as well. if she is not responding to the antibiotic treatment i believe taking her to a specialist is the right thing to do.

Unfortunately I agree with your vet that MRI is probably the next step. Even though his ears appeared normal inner ear disease is still possible although fairly unlikely, especially since there is no nystagmus eye movement noted. A head tilt can be a sign of infectious or inflammatory brain disease, a stroke or blood clot in the brain, or even a brain tumor. If the head tilt is the only neurologic symptom and your dog is otherwise acting like his normal self you could consider simply monitoring for additional neurologic signs - with most of these neurologic problems I would expect more symptoms to develop as the disease progresses.

It could be another ear infection causing the head tilt, especially if Macie has a history of them. I would get her checked out by a vet today for this to get it diagnosed and treated. If she does have another ear infection, the vet can treat it. I hope this helps.

A head tilt is always something that should be investigated by a veterinarian as it can point to neurological problems arising from the highly contagious distemper virus, a serious inner ear infection or a stroke or vestibular syndrome and more,,,, If your puppy has a head tilt, please immediately take it to a veterinarian. Vaccination will protect against distemper virus.

It can possibly be induced by the exercise. Make sure to walk Coco with a harness around the chest rather than the collar around the neck (and I would not have a collar on at all during this healing time). If it resolves on its own, I would not be too concerned with the twitching. If it occurs at other times of the day, I would call the vet to see if it is a concern.
