Why is my puppy acting drunk and losing balance after ear infection?

Pet's info: Dog | Weimaraner | Female | unspayed | 28 lbs

We are at a bet now with our 4 month old weim. 900.00 in tests and they want to call in a specialist. She had an ear infection last month. She now loses balance and acts a little drunk. All tests blood and urine came back great. Now hey are putting charcoals down her stomach Oh yeah toxicology from urine was fine also. I am thinking middle or inner ear infection.

Middle ear infection would be the most common cause for these symptoms at this age, but there is a small chance that it could be a brain condition as well. if she is not responding to the antibiotic treatment i believe taking her to a specialist is the right thing to do.

No it should not cause paralysis but it can cause severe balance issues on one side, meaning she will always fall on this side, the limbs of the affected side will still be able to move though. after 5 weeks of antibiotics i would expect seeing a significant improvement assuming the correct antibiotic was chosen for the condition.

I would be worried about a potential inner ear infection. Other ear infections can progress to inner ear infections which are painful, can result in hearing loss and balance issues. It is possible that the head tilt is the first sign that the balance Centers are being affected. I would advise taking Dahlia back in to the vet.

This could be anything from symptoms of poisoning to an ear infection or vestibular disease to a tumor or neurological condition. I recommend getting her seen by your vet as soon as possible for an exam, bloodwork, possibly x-rays, so your vet can determine the cause of Portia's balance problems and be better able to advise you on treatments.

Hi. This is definitely not normal. I would be concerned she has episodes of low glucose, a neurologic condition she may have been born with, or another possibility is an infection that is affecting her neurologic system. I recommend she get a full blood panel, try another food to entice her to eat more, and have a full neurologic exam done by your veterinarian or a neurologic specialist. Having none of her shots does put infection high on the list.

A physical exam and bloodwork (CBC, chemistry/thyroid panels, urinalysis) may diagnose metabolic or neurologic issues, especially in a senior pet.
