Why is my 5-week-old puppy panting and gagging like he's choking?

I am concerned that she is having such trouble breathing. This could be another pneumonia, an upper respiratory infection, a fungal infection, a congenital heart problem and much more. If your vet has already done X-rays and they were normal, you may want to talk to them about having an ultrasound of the heart done. Also, I would have her blood work checked to see how her liver and kidney values are and see what her white blood count looks like. Hello, at 5 months of age the most common reason for coughing/choking is kennel cough. I suggest you get him to a vet for an exam and medications. This can progress to a pneumonia quickly and in a small 2# dog this can be extremely serious. I am very worried about this as you stated he was weak and lost his appetite. I don't suggest that you continue to perform any "first aid" for choking on a dog this small as you can easily injury him. I assure you that it is very unlikely he has something stuck in his throat. I would recommend bringing Pippa to a veterinarian especially if she is coughing and breathing hard. She may have an upper respiratory infection but could also be something more. Your veterinarian can listen to her to make sure her lungs are clear and if not can perform x-rays to make sure she doesn't have pneumonia or bronchitis. I would recommend bringing him in for an exam. Sometimes rapid breathing can be a sign of discomfort or illness. It is possible he may need a few rounds of deworming, or could have an infection and associated fever. Either way, around 8 weeks is when he should be getting his first round of vaccines and an exam, so I would simply talk to your veterinarian at that appointment.

Hi, a puppy of 3 months old is too young o be left alone at night outside. i suggest bringing him in and keeping him in a crate to keep him comfortable. Make sure he has plenty of cool water and is an a controlled climate. Keeping him inside where it is cool is better for him. I would keep an eye on his breathing, and the color of his gums. They should be pink like a human's gums, not pale or blue. if they are pale or bluish he is having trouble breathing and needs to see a vet as soon as possible or he could die. You can also take his temperature. A dog's temperature should be between 99.5-102.5F. If it is higher, he needs to be cooled off with cool water until you can get to a vet for medications. If it is lower, then he needs warmth. Either way, a too low or high temperature is cause for a trip to the vet when your vet opens. Good luck, i hope this helps!

Poor puppy. Yes open mouth breathing and raspy breaths indicates that puppy is not getting enough oxygen, which can be due to either fluid in the lungs, congestion in the upper nasal passage or some other birth defect. It sounds like he might have an upper respiratory infection so he should be examined by a vet. He might need an antibiotic to treat. A change in weather should not cause him to gag and wheeze so I don't think that is the reason. Schedule an appointment with a vet as soon as you can.
