Why is my rescue puppy coughing, vomiting, and losing facial hair?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 35 lbs

My dog has an occasional cough (comes and goes about once a day where he coughs a lot and then stops) and hair loss around his face (eyes/mouth/ears) and vomiting (twice in the last four days). He is still playing and eating and drinking water. I am not sure why he is losing hair, coughing and vomiting. He is 6 months and was recently rescued from a shelter.

Assuming he has been vaccinated for distemper, It sounds as Hudson is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

The fur loss is likely unrelated, it is to be expected though as it's getting warmer and he is changing his puppy coat to a permanent one.
