Why is my newly adopted dog coughing, throwing up, and has a wet nose?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

Our newly adopted pet Russell Terrier/Chihuahua mixed looks like he is coughing? He has thrown up twice. Both times of the liquid variety? Nose got a little wet recently after being dry? Seems happy, but we want to make sure; what could it be causing the heaving, throw up and wet nose?

This is suspicious of kennel cough, which is an infection of the upper respiratory system. The throwing up when coughing is normally seen when dogs have a bad cough like this. A dry nose versus wet nose actually does not a indicate a specific problem.

Kennel cough is most suspicious if Chance has been in contact with other dogs in the past month or so. If Chance has not had contact with other dogs, then the cough is likely due to something else. They can develop a cough with more concerning conditions like pneumonia, heart worm, heart disease and cancer.

For this reason, it's best to have Chance checked out by a veterinarian soon. They will be able to determine the cause of the cough and prescribe the appropriate treatment. If Chance came from a shelter, then they often offer a free vet exam within a couple of weeks after adoption.

I hope that helps and Chance gets better soon.
