My new puppy is coughing, discharge, low energy. Emergency vet?

Congratulations on your new puppy! It sounds like Nashville may have an upper respiratory infection, or kennel cough. You are absolutely correct in being concerned, as this condition can progress down into the lungs and cause pneumonia if not treated. I recommend having her seen by a vet sooner than next week so that she can start the appropriate course of treatment. Your vet may even elect to postpone her shots until she is better to give her immune system to fight the infection properly.

It's not uncommon that these shelter pups end up with an upper respiratory infection and it looks like Raven and Scarlette got it. These are usually mild diseases, but can be controlled with medication. I would call the shelter soon and ask if you can schedule with their vet. Often, the adoption agreements allow for a two-week time period where you can bring the dog back for veterinary treatment. I hope that helps and good on you for adopting rather than buying.

It sounds as though Vito has been through quite a bit over the past week! It is concerning that he is now lethargic, not eating, and coughing, after being normal for a week after his procedures. My main concern is that he may have developed kennel cough or canine influenza after being in a shelter situation. To answer your question, yes, I do think you should take him to the vet for evaluation. In addition to a physical exam, Vito may need to have chest x-rays taken or blood testing performed. Poor Baby! I am sorry she isn't feeling good. The symptoms you have mentioned make me concerned that Baby may have some sort of respiratory issue-kennel cough, pneumonia. I would recommend contacting your regular vet and arrange for her to be seen today. Advise them she has just come from a shelter situation, as repsiratory diseases can be quite contagious. They will likely ask for you to keep Baby in the car until they are ready to bring her into an exam room. Your vet will do a thorough exam, listen to Baby's heart and lungs. They may recommend some diagnostics such as X-rays and bloodwork too. Depending on the issues identified treatment may range (assuming it is a respiratory issue) from oral medications and rest at home, to hospitalization with IV fluids, oxygen therapy and injectable medications. I hope Baby starts to feel better soon!

This is suspicious of kennel cough, which is an infection of the upper respiratory system. The throwing up when coughing is normally seen when dogs have a bad cough like this. A dry nose versus wet nose actually does not a indicate a specific problem. Kennel cough is most suspicious if Chance has been in contact with other dogs in the past month or so. If Chance has not had contact with other dogs, then the cough is likely due to something else. They can develop a cough with more concerning conditions like pneumonia, heart worm, heart disease and cancer. For this reason, it's best to have Chance checked out by a veterinarian soon. They will be able to determine the cause of the cough and prescribe the appropriate treatment. If Chance came from a shelter, then they often offer a free vet exam within a couple of weeks after adoption. I hope that helps and Chance gets better soon.

Coso is probably recovering from an upper respiratory infection or cold, or kennel cough. This may take another week or two to fully resolve. As long as he's eating and acting normal it's nothing to be overly concerned about. Should he stop eating, be lethargic or the sneezing doesn't clear up in a week or so then a veterinary exam is in order. Puppies often get sick when together especially in a shelter or rescue situation and heal quickly once in a home with better care and nutrition. Congrats on your new dog, but I'm sorry Shino is sick! It could be that he may have kennel cough causing his symptoms. He may be up to date on his vaccines but he may not be vaccinated for kennel cough. I would have Shino seen by a vet first thing in the morning for this. While kennel cough is self limiting, his symptoms may be helped with medication. I can give you some stuff for at home that can do for him in conduction with medication from the vet. Any dog with kennel cough should be isolated for at least two weeks, possibly longer depending on the severity of the infection. Keep your dog in a well-humidified area, and use a harness instead of a collar to minimize coughing. Rest your dog for at least seven days to minimize irritation of the airways caused by excessive coughing. You can bring your dog into the bathroom with you while you have a shower, as the steam may help with the respiratory irritation. I hope this helps, have Shino seen by a vet tomorrow!
