My puppy's paws are cold. Can I put socks on them for warmth?

If his paw pads seem irritated you could try Musher’s Secret. You might want to put baby socks on his paws (if he’ll tolerate them) until the boots come in when he’s going outdoors.

If you are going to go outside and it is very cold out, or if you will be going for long walks or on colder surfaces (not snow but ice or cold pavement) then booties are a good idea as they can get frostbite and wounds from cold on their feet. Dogs are comfortable at a similar temperature range as we are, maybe a bit cooler. Puppies have to be warmer than adult dogs. Make sure he has a warm bed and little house to climb into. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bentley. It is worth having him evaluated by his veterinarian to determine if his paws require treatment. If they are painful, this will make him not want you to put anything over them. He may need antibiotics and pain medications for them to heal. Otherwise, is there any place else you can take him to go potty? Could you carry him across the icy area to snowy or grassy place? You can buy protective hiking boots, but as with the socks I am not sure if he would wear them. You can go slowly and give treats while applying them. In the meantime, do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Great question. There are many ice melt products that are safe for pets. Non-toxic and non-irritating. You can also buy booties for Wolverine which would protect his paws while he is outside. Some dogs won't wear these so it's going to be a trial and error. Also, you can rinse and wipe his paws off after he goes outside to remove any ice melt that he stepped on and remove any snow that is stuck to his paws or hair coat. Again, great question. It is likely that the cold conditions, low humidity, and salt on the ground has caused his paws to dry out and become cracked/sore. Consider looking into getting winter booties for Kiba. Ruffwear makes wonderful dog boots for the cold weather. You can also try a paw protectant like Musher's Secret to help prevent injury to his paws.

Paw pads are typically cold either when they have been in contact with a cold surface or when the blood is not perfusing the paw pads properly. Poor perfusion can occur with underlying heart disease, conditions causing low blood pressure, blood clot formation, or other underlying conditions. It is not normal for Beesly's paw pads to consistently be cold if she is inside. It would be best to have her evaluated by her vet.
