Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Great question. There are many ice melt products that are safe for pets. Non-toxic and non-irritating. You can also buy booties for Wolverine which would protect his paws while he is outside. Some dogs won't wear these so it's going to be a trial and error. Also, you can rinse and wipe his paws off after he goes outside to remove any ice melt that he stepped on and remove any snow that is stuck to his paws or hair coat. Again, great question. My dog's paws are cracked and red. How can I prevent paw pain?

Hello. The only way to prevent these is to use booties on Jack's paws, but if he is not licking his feet, nor does he seem uncomfortable or limps, then I do not think he needs the booties. I would be washing his feet every day, either with a dilute Povidone Iodine or Chlorhexidine solution. Wipe his feet with the solution, then dry with a soft towel without rinsing. It's normal that as Boo grows, his paws will not be as soft and become rough and hard. They should be rough to give him traction when he runs, and protect his feet from the ground. You can protect them from the snow, salt, and ice when you walk him outdoors by using Musher's Secret on them.
