My puppy's eye is cloudy with mucus. Is it infection or blindness?

That would be extremely rare to have to put a dog down because of an eye infection. See what happens now that you cleaned the mucous away. If it comes back than you should have your vet take a look at him to determine if medication is needed. He may need an antibiotic to treat an infection. So sorry about your other dog. That is sad.

If your vet is closed today, I would recommend going to an emergency vet for more urgent evaluation since eye problems can progress rapidly. In all likelihood, Phoebe needs to have a full eye exam, as well as some diagnostic tests including a fluorescein stain of her eye (to check for ulcers/scratches on the cornea), Schirmer tear test (to check tear production), and possibly have her eye pressures tested. It sounds as Bert is suffering from an eye infection, it is relatively common in dogs. you will need to take him to the vet the first chance you get, the vet will check the eyes, if it is indeed a simple eye infection your vet will prescribe an antibiotic eye drops that will probably solve the problem in no time.
