My 5-month-old puppy is clearing his throat. Is this normal?

That is not normal. Unfortunately, we do not have over the counter meds to clear up this symptom. You need to have him evaluated by your veterinarian. The big concern here would be laryngeal dysfunction or megaesophagus.

The symptoms she is experiencing such as trying to clear her throat, may actually be a cough. Coughing and wheezing can be indicative of an upper respiratory infection. I am sorry to hear about Layal! You may be feeling her laryngeal area/cartilages, but without examining your dog it is impossible to tell if what you are feeling is a normal structure. An occasional clearing of the throat/cough isn't unusual just like in people, but if it is happening with increasing frequency or it is happening every time she moves a certain way then I would recommend having her examined by her veterinarian. I would make a video recording of the sound if you can to show your veterinarian in case she doesn't repeat the behavior while at the vet.

Congratulations on your new puppy Sully! At his age, he should be starting to lose his puppy teeth so that may be where the grinding sound is coming from. Open his mouth and look very thoroughly just to make sure you don't see anything stuck in between his teeth, in his cheeks or the roof of his mouth. The coughing I would be a little more concerned about. Pets do get minor viruses and allergies. If he is completely normal otherwise, you may watch the coughing to see if it clears up on its own. If it is getting worse, take him in to see the vet. He's a cutie!

Her throat and trachea do look irritated. If your vet isn't willing to examine her mouth and throat, I would get a second opinion at another clinic. Since she has had no improvement since her last visit, I feel she should be seen again, either by your current vet or by another one who will check her throat.

Harsh respiratory sounds are typically caused by some type of airway inflammation. Some underlying illness may be causing her to have a sore throat/nose. It is best to have her assessed by a veterinarian to make sure there are no signs of infection. If she is having difficulty breathing, I'd recommend having her assessed as soon as possible.

It sounds like they both caught an upper respiratory infection also known as kennel cough. this disease usually resolves without treatment within a couple weeks but if the cough is too severe it is recommended to go to the vet in order to get cough medicine and antibiotics.
