My dog's hacking cough: reverse sneezing, kennel cough, or allergies?

Hello, sorry to hear about your dog. There is definitely a possibility that your puppy may have introduces something such as kennel cough to your other dog. Most often with kennel cough you will hear a dry cough, hacking cough. Kennel cough most often resolves on its own, but if his signs persist, visit your veterinarian for further assessment. You may also want to ensure your puppy is fully vaccinated and monitor for him developing a cough as well. Hope this helps.

All of us in the profession are always worried about canine flu outbreaks. I would advise that if the condition worsens or doesn't resolve, have your veterinarian evaluate Jackie. There are many causes of coughing and having a thorough history would help narrow that down. Of course kennel cough, allergies, things in the air that are irritants, etc are all possible including many others. Again, with everything going on now across the United States, I would advise a trip to your vet's office with her. They can evaluate her and then advise some treatment or diagnostic testing to screen for a cause. They may advise fecal tests, blood tests, x-rays, or other tests to determine a cause. In a young dog like him, something like kennel cough needs to be considered. I recommend that you have Kingsley evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include thoracic radiographs and bloodwork. Treatment would be dependent on findings. If it is kennel cough often times it resolves with supportive care including antibiotics. Good luck and have a good night!

My best guess is she has kennel cough. It is the most common reason for coughing in puppies. I can almost guarantee that there is nothing stuck in her throat and that it is not an allergy. Both are very unlikely. The vet should have checked her throat as you can usually make them cough with palpation of the trachea. She should be on antibiotics and cough medicine. I suggest you call the vet back and discuss kennel cough and treatment.

I agree that infection is less likely in Chandler if he is to around other animals. At Chandler's age I would be most concerned about heart disease causing his cough. In a Jack Russel terrier a collapsing trachea or even asthma could also be causing these signs. Unfortunately, cancer can also be a cause of coughing in an older dog. I definitely recommend you take Chandler to your veterinarian for an X-ray and examination. If heart disease is present medications can be started to reduce the cough. Congratulations you bringing Alice into your family! That could be kennel cough but bronchitis or reverse sneezing could also fit this description. Monitor her very closely for signs of lethargy or not eating. If it does not go away after a week or so, if the cough worsens or she continues throwing up, have her examined by her veterinarian. Heart disease or primary lung disease are also possible but uncommon in a young dog. At home use a humidifier and air purifier if the furnace is running. The most common reason for nasal congestion, sneezing and reverse sneezing are: allergies, upper respiratory tract infections, or foreign material above the soft palpate. I usually put animals with these symptoms on an antihistamine and an antibiotic. Most of the time that resolves the issue in an otherwise healthy young dog. I would take him to the Vet since it has been going on for several weeks. Good luck!
