My active puppy chases cars and barks at people. What to do?

You will have to keep him on him a leash at all times to start. When he sees something and gets excited and tries to run, then correct him and tell him no, make him sit and calm down. make sure you reward him with a treat when he does this to help encourage the right behavior. Once he does will with this, get a longer leash--like 10-20 feet. He will have more freedom but you can also step and grab it and be in control when needed. Every time he does not chase them, reward him. it does help if you make him sit and stay when you notice the people coming before he does. From there you can let him off leash once he is trained and trusted.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Lucci's behavior is common. He is still young and you can still work on this. I would take him to a trainer to have him learn the "leave it" and "look" commands. I would purchase a gentle leader face harness and use that on walks. Do not take him off the leash around other dogs or children until he listens to you perfectly. Little breed dogs are loud and they bark. Some are more pushy with their dominance and you will need to figure out how much Lucci will exhibit these behaviors as he grows up and reaches social/behavioral maturity (up to 3 years of age). Hi there! Many dogs are highly aroused by movement and have a tendency to chase cars. What your trainer recommended - teaching your dog to do something else, such as sit or look at you, for a treat instead of lunging after the car - is indeed the best approach, and it's what I recommend as well. I would NOT use a shock collar, as this has a high risk of causing other behavioral issues such as aggression or anxiety, and will not do anything to teach your dog what you want him to do instead. Practice at a distance at first where he can be successful (which may need to be a long way from the road, at first), and praise and reward him with a treat for sitting calmly or looking up at you whenever a car passes by. As he gets better at this, you will be able to gradually move closer to the road until eventually he can do it even when the cars are very close by. You could also consider a Gentle Leader head halter to give you better physical control of him and help prevent lunging, if you need something that will work quickly while you're still working on training him.

This type of behavior can be very concerning, especially when there are small children around. The good news is that your puppy is still very young and this is a good time to teach her good and appropriate behaviors. You are already doing a great job by exercising her regularly (a fast-paced 20-30 minute walk 2-3 times a day is best) and by redirecting her aggressive tendencies with chew toys. Another tactic you can use in training is to immediately stop play and ignore her if she starts becoming aggressive. This will teach her that that type of behavior does not get her what she wants (your attention). It is also a good idea to always use positive reinforcement when she is being well behaved. Puppies respond better and learn faster from positive reinforcement (like verbal praise and treats) than negative reinforcement (like yelling or hitting them). It would also be wise to start some initial training of basic commands as well, like sit, stay/wait, come, etc. This will help her focus and energy levels and will help establish your role the dominant one in the relationship. Zeke is a very handsome guy! I see that he looks like an Australian Shepherd or a Border Collie. It's very common for herding breeds to try and chase fast-moving objects like cars. To address this problem, you will need to start with Zeke on a leash at a distance from the road. You need to be far enough away that is able to notice the cars going by without reacting - this may mean you need a *lot* of distance at first, depending on how sensitive he is. Each time a car goes by, praise and reward him with a treat for staying calm. When he's doing well with this, you can gradually begin moving closer to the road, one step at a time. If he gets too excited and tries to chase, just move further away until he can be calm, and work your way closer again. Eventually, with practice, he should be able to stand calmly with you on the sidewalk even with cars driving by a few feet away. It's also important to keep Zeke on-leash or in a safely enclosed area at all times, to prevent him from practicing his car chasing behavior outside of training sessions. It can be challenging to do this on your own in some cases, so if you're still having trouble, I would recommend finding a good reward-based trainer who can work with you in person. It sounds like two different things might be going on: overexcitement and potentially leash aggression. To me it doesn’t sound like Bruce is timid or anxious around other dogs and new places, but rather that he is really really excited to be out and about. The attacking fences where there are other dogs could be a sign of leash aggression. There are things to do to help - you should start by working with basic commands at home - ask him to either sit or make eye contact at home, then start practicing with him on a leash and when there is a minor distraction around. Gradually work up to going outside in a quiet area. If you’re struggling an obedience class might help, or you could also ask your vet for a referral to a behaviorist.

Use a head harness such as the Gentle Leader or Halti. Either will allow for more control as well as let you correct negative behaviors quickly. Consider a pheromone product such as the Adaptil collar or DAP diffuser. Gradual desensitization to vehicles should also be started. Get him used to being around one car at a time. Be patient and be consistent. Offer praise and rewards as he progresses.
