My dog misbehaves on walks & in car. How can I train him better?

Pet's info: Dog | BullBoxer | Male | neutered | 4 years old | 54 lbs

We got Bruce at 7 months old and he is typically very well behaved at home, even with the small animals. However, whenever he is taken "out" he refuses to listen, constantly pulls on his lead, attacks any fence between him and other dogs, chokes himself on the front/back seat divider in the car, and tries to climb into the front seat from around the seats between the seats and doors. Is this social anxiety? Is there any training I can do to help him be more well behaved outside the home?

It sounds like two different things might be going on: overexcitement and potentially leash aggression. To me it doesn’t sound like Bruce is timid or anxious around other dogs and new places, but rather that he is really really excited to be out and about. The attacking fences where there are other dogs could be a sign of leash aggression. There are things to do to help - you should start by working with basic commands at home - ask him to either sit or make eye contact at home, then start practicing with him on a leash and when there is a minor distraction around. Gradually work up to going outside in a quiet area. If you’re struggling an obedience class might help, or you could also ask your vet for a referral to a behaviorist.

I suggest you take Bruce to a professional dog trainer. This is not something you are likely to "fix" yourself. Behavior problems are not usually quick fixes. You need someone to help you figure out his triggers and then "train" you on how to handle him appropriately when those arise. I found these in your area:

I would highly recommend keeping him on a leas for a while until he is better trained. I would recommend starting with basic commands like come, sit and play. I would take him some place not crowded and keep him attached to a leash and start with the above commands. once he starts responding you can add length to his leash. My dog barks and lunges at other dogs on walks. What can I do?

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! This is tough! He sure is cute! I recommend using the gentle leader head collar for better control and asking for sedatives like trazadone from your Vet. Do not take him to these places until you train him to look at you (with treats) in social situations. This will take some time. Why does my dog stop walking on leash when dogs bark or in new places?

I recommend a group obedience training class so he will learn to listen to you with other people and dogs around. In the meantime find a friend with an older confident dog that walks well on the leash and plan your dog walks together. That way your dog will learn from the other dog and not be as anxious. Please reward him when he relaxes and goes forward. I would also start with short walks where there are minimal distractions. Why does my dog suddenly pull on the leash when we walk in new areas?

It sounds like Bear is developing some anxiety about walking for some reason. If you're pulling on his leash, correcting him, speaking to him in a frustrated way in any manner, stop all that immediately. It may also be nothing that you're doing and just genetics coming in to play. I recommend bringing really special treats on your walks and keeping him happy and relaxed with those. Plan on continuing this for a few weeks to a few months. If that doesn't work, I'd highly recommend speaking with a qualified positive-only dog trainer. As a final note, definitely do not use an electric collar on this pup under any circumstances, or you will see worsening of his behavior.

My dog runs to other dogs on walks. How can I control him safely?

I would recommend consulting with a trainer to use your commands so he follows your guidance so you're not relying on your strength to hold him. You could also work on using a gentle leader or a no pull harness/gentle walker which requires less strength to hold your dog. Your concerns are very valid and I would be concerned as well about him getting hit by car or injured by another dog this behavior continues.
