Can my puppy recover from pulmonary contusion and breathing issues?

I'm so sorry to hear Bentley had such a scare! Ingestion of water can lead to fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema) and a secondary infection (such as pneumonia). As you found him right away and he was treated quickly, typically these dogs do recover fully. He may be sent home with a medication to help decrease any remaining fluid in his lungs (such as Lasix) and a prophylactic antibiotic to prevent infection. When he is home, continue to monitor him closely over the following days for any lethargy, inappetence, wheezing, or difficulty breathing. If these are seen, I would have him rechecked immediately. If he is otherwise acting normally, I would have him rechecked after he finishes his medications and then I would expect him to be fine. Good luck!

Hello, sorry to hear about Princess. In cases with dog bites all cases are different. The general goal is to treat the most pertinent issue, in this case air in the chest cavity as this can cause severe respiratory distress and even death. The next risk with dog bites is infection, so having aggressive antibiotic therapy is essential. Finally, lung contusions will get worse before they get any better. Therefore, I would expect the x-rays of her lungs to look worse before they show improvement. My only concern which goes in hand with having air in the chest, is that of a lung lobe laceration. This may cause continued air leakage into the chest and thus could lead to respiratory distress. I would continue to monitor her x-rays intermittently and watch her for any signs of respiratory distress such as open mouth breathing, blue gums, or increased abdominal effort while breathing. If you note any of these , then Princess should be evaluated immediately. Otherwise, Princess should be on antibiotics and pain medications for the next couple of weeks. The rib should hopefully heal over the next number of weeks, and prevent it from puncturing Maverick's lung again. You will likely have to be very careful with him while this is healing, and probably will cage rest him for weeks. The vet can let you know the treatment protocol, but I hope that he heals up!

If Ebony still has a respiratory infection, it is going to be even more difficult on her body because of her narrow nostrils, which may explain the difficulty breathing. This breed will typically have a hard time when dealing with a respiratory infection because they are unable to move air through their nostrils efficiently. I would recommend taking her in to be seen by a veterinarian and have chest x-rays performed to see if there are any abnormalities that need to be addressed or more infection that requires further antibiotic therapy. Yes, it is quite possible the pneumonia has not resolved. She needs urgent reassessment by a vet and further medication, possibly intravenous fluids and antibiotics in order to stabilise her condition. Such severe pneumonia in a young pup is very concerning and can be fatal due to lung scarring and collapse. It is possible there may be underlying birth defects contributing to the original condition and/or her poor response to treatment

If he is not walking well and his breathing is abnormal, I highly recommend you consider having him reevaluated by a veterinarian since he has not improved. They may take chest x rays to check on why he is breathing loudly such as a pulmonary contusion for example. Treatment would be dependent on findings though at least pain control medications can be started. I hope he does well. Good luck and have a good night!
