My puppy gets car sick. What safe OTC meds can I give for long trips?

Unfortunately, by law it is illegal for the experts at Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to recommend and give the dose information for any drug, including OTC drugs, without seeing the animal in person first. That's because doing so requires a veterinary client patient relationship which cannot be achieved via an internet forum. In addition, the experts cannot say for certain if a specific drug is safe for your dog. I would have her seen by a vet tomorrow to discuss the use of medication to help her with her car sickness. The vet can prescribe medication that is safe for her, including possibly OTC medications. You can do a few things in the car to help Rainbow as well. Keep her forward facing during the trip, and you can purchase a specially designed doggie seatbelt to keep her that way. They are available online or in pet stores. Keep the windows open a crack to give her fresh air. Limit food intake before going on the trip, and medications from the vet can help prevent nausea. Good luck on your trip!

I would not recommend you give anything. She will be too small to take any over the counter medications. She will likely be just fine. The best thing to do is to put her in a kennel and let her sleep. If you guys are getting her overly excited and you let her run around the vehicle you have a higher chance that she will get sick. If she does get sick just clean it up and keep her calm and quiet. You can try giving Dramamine which is available over the counter, however it is not specifically labeled to use in dogs, and it is not effective for all dogs. Your vet can provide you with an anti-nausea medication, or some over the counter medications such as benadryl/Dramamine may help. Your vet can let you know the correct dosage for your pup's current age and weight. The good news is that most puppies naturally grow out of carsickness as they get older!

I think the answer depends on why Katie is getting unsettled. If she is nauseated, there are some medications to try for that. If she is anxious, there are other medications that may help with that. I have found that the best medications are prescription, so I would recommend contacting your vet for a suggestion. Again, there are both prescription anti-nausea and prescription anti-anxiety medications that may help. I would recommend asking your vet about a drug called 'maropitant' or Cerenia. This is the best drug for dogs for car sickness. Since we haven't physically examined your pet, the policy here is that we cannot prescribe medication to Buster unfortunately, but your vet can easily prescribe a motion sickness medication for Buster with a simple phone call in most cases, especially if he was seen within the last year. Also an alternative over the counter medication can be recommended to him as well. I hope that you are able to help him out for those frequent car rides! I have even heard of an owner who would simply place an e-collar (from your local pet store) on her pet and this eliminated the motion sickness altogether. Its worth a shot! Best wishes and take care.
