My 14lb dog gets car sick and anxious. What can I give her?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like Ginger is experiencing anxiety with a bit of nausea in the car. I would recommend using a medication that is geared more towards preventing nausea. Benadryl is a hit or miss and most of the time, I find, does not help with motion sickness. I would have a veterinarian examine Ginger and write a prescription for Cerenia. This is an anti-nausea medication but at higher doses, works well at preventing motion sickness. I hope this helps!

Benadryl is generally quite safe for dogs so it's unlikely that this would cause any harm; however, it rarely does much to help with anxiety in my experience. A better option would be to talk to your veterinarian about prescription anti-anxiety medication such as alprazolam or trazodone - these medications are much more effective for anxious pets, and can be used as-needed for car rides or other situations that may cause stress :)

You can try giving Dramamine which is available over the counter, however it is not specifically labeled to use in dogs, and it is not effective for all dogs. There was recently a study that revealed that a significant number of cases of what we thought was anxiety in the car may actually be nausea and the clinical signs resolved with anti-nausea medication given before car rides. So, it would be worth discussing anti-nausea options with your vet. There is a prescription medication called Cerenia that works very well, but there are also some other options. If that doesn't help, then I would discuss anti-anxiety medications with your veterinarian to help break the cycle of her anxiety. Finally, some dogs will pant and shake from excitement, so that would also be an option. It might take some trial and error, but hopefully you can get Keesha back to enjoying her car rides. Hello, yes there are over the counter motion sickness medications such as Dramamine and Zofran. Rarely Benadryl, however by law, these can only be recommended after Kala has been examined by your veterinarian. You should schedule an appointment with your veterinarian to have her evaluated prior to your trip so that they can recommend which of the above is the best for Kala. I would recommend asking your vet about a drug called 'maropitant' or Cerenia. This is the best drug for dogs for car sickness. Alternatively Ondasetron can be used, however it might be hard to get a tablet small enough for Fiona. Best of luck with Fiona, I hope your car trip goes well.

I would not recommend you give anything. She will be too small to take any over the counter medications. She will likely be just fine. The best thing to do is to put her in a kennel and let her sleep. If you guys are getting her overly excited and you let her run around the vehicle you have a higher chance that she will get sick. If she does get sick just clean it up and keep her calm and quiet.
