My puppy burps after eating. Is it reflux? What can I do to help?

I suppose it could be mild regurgitation. Reflux is not commonly recognized in dogs but it probably does happen occasionally. If she seems to eat her food quickly or have difficulty eating large pieces of food I suppose it's possible that the smaller pieces will help. It's really difficult to know what this might be without being able to see Precious do it - you may want to try getting this on video since she has done it consistently for several years and make an appointment to show it to your vet.

Hello. Acid reflux can result from several things, not just the production of acid in response to food in the stomach. Esophageal disease/motility disorders, diet, over-secretion of pepsin & non-specific inflammation can all contribute to the problem. It may be as simple as switching to a sensitive skin/stomach formulation of dog food, or an actual GI diet or one geared toward allergies such as Prescription Diet z/d. Adding an acid reflux medication such as famotidine or omeprazole is often a pretty safe option to try. Talk to your vet about what might be the best option for Gemma. Usually eating/drinking too fast or swallowing some air when eating/drinking. It is not anything I would be concerned about unless the hiccups persist for a long period or time or he starts vomiting. If he is a fast eater/drinker you can do things to make him eat/drink slower like put large, smooth rock into his bowl so he has to eat/drink around it. This will slow him down.

Some puppies can make noises while they eat, which can be normal, and if Bojangles is eating too quickly he could be choking a little which is causing the gag. Trying to get him to slow down in his eating and drinking with a slow-down bowl (or placing a few tennis balls in the bowl) or feeding smaller meals more frequently may help. If he is choking a lot, acting like he can't breathe or is painful, is vomiting or can't keep anything down, or seems in distress from it, a vet visit to rule out anything is always best.

Hi !Does Leia eat very quickly ? If so, have you tried feeding her using one of those slow feeding bowls ? It might be an idea. Also she should be on three meals per day at least. Puppies are funny, and when their stomachs are full, they look really bloated. It is important that part of the issue isn't caused by intestinal parasites, so I would recommend a dewormer. Then you can divide her daily food ration into 3 meals. You can also use a special bowl or treat toy to get Bonnie to slow down.

YEs, fewer signs fo nausea/discomfort and less burping wpuld be an indication that the treatment is working. Ensuring he eats slowly by using a slow feeder or scattering his food over a wide tray or plate so he has to work harder for it can also be helpful in improving overall digestion.
