My dog makes a gagging noise after eating. Is it reflux or burping?

If Snowball is eating quickly she could be swallowing lots of air which can cause burping. There are a number of bowls available that force dogs to eat slower which may be helpful. I would talk to your vet again before starting her on medication just to be on the safe side. Good luck!

Hello. Acid reflux can result from several things, not just the production of acid in response to food in the stomach. Esophageal disease/motility disorders, diet, over-secretion of pepsin & non-specific inflammation can all contribute to the problem. It may be as simple as switching to a sensitive skin/stomach formulation of dog food, or an actual GI diet or one geared toward allergies such as Prescription Diet z/d. Adding an acid reflux medication such as famotidine or omeprazole is often a pretty safe option to try. Talk to your vet about what might be the best option for Gemma. Poor girl. She may have a condition that is causing this such as megaesophagus. I am not sure if your vet has ran any tests yet, but I would recommend starting with thoracic radiographs and perhaps even a barium series will need to be done to detect a possible megaesophagus. Form there the vet will prescribe medication if this conditon is confirmed. The main concern with a pet that regurgitates is aspiration pneumonia. This is why they suggest to elevate the food bowl to allow gravity to help keep the food down. However most owners have to make a gruel (water mixed with food and then puréed) and also give pro-motility drugs (i.e. Metoclopramide) in addition to help manage this condition. Some puppies can make noises while they eat, which can be normal, and if Bojangles is eating too quickly he could be choking a little which is causing the gag. Trying to get him to slow down in his eating and drinking with a slow-down bowl (or placing a few tennis balls in the bowl) or feeding smaller meals more frequently may help. If he is choking a lot, acting like he can't breathe or is painful, is vomiting or can't keep anything down, or seems in distress from it, a vet visit to rule out anything is always best.

Poor guy. This sounds like Bennett may be experiencing some acid reflux. Typically this affects pets when they have an empty stomach (at night) or early morning. Ask you vet about doing a trial run with some antacids to see if this helps. You can also feed him a late night snack (small meal) to see if this helps Otherwise consider having some bloodwork ran to check his organ function for any further clues. The sound you are describing could be related to Bella's collapsing trachea, but it also could be a reverse sneeze. Reverse sneezing in small Terrier dogs is fairly common and usually related to allergies. However, depending on where you live, reverse sneezing can also be from nasal mites- these are easily treatable with a product like Revolution, as long as you have a negative heartworm test first. It is also possible the sound Bella is making has developed secondary to a chronic infection such as dental disease or tooth root abscess. Because there are some different possible causes of Bella's throat sound, I recommend a pre-anesthetic exam so your vet can rule out some causes and help to make the anaesthesia as safe as possible for Bella. Your vet may want to run some basic blood work and take throat/chest x-rays to determine the cause of the noise. Best of luck to you and Bella. It's definitely not healthy for her to do that and it could be due to her diet but i could not tell you that for sure as there are many conditions that could cause such a reflux, for example excessive acidity in the stomach, pancreatitis, gastrointestinal infections and many more, i would recommend taking her o the vet in order to get it checked and treated.
