Puppy has brown scaly scabs after bathing. What's the cause & remedy?

Congratulations on your new addition! I do see a bit of mild redness in areas of Hazel's abdomen, but it's hard to see the scabs very clearly. The good news is that her skin is by no means in terrible shape, despite her itchiness. Certainly, the more a dog licks and scratches at themself, the more they damage the protective outermost skin layer, which can lead to the development of a bacterial skin infection. With that said, I don't see obvious signs that Hazel currently has a significant infection, but it's important to curb her itching as much as possible. I'm glad to hear that she's been routinely receiving Nexgard - be sure to continue it and adjust the dosing to her current body weight as she continues to grow. This will help to prevent issues with fleas, and also mange (although this is not a labeled claim). Generally speaking, puppies do not typically experience significant allergy issues because it takes repeated contact with an allergen in order to mount an allergic immune response. However, puppies can develop some contact dermatitis issue. You can certainly bathe Hazel with Malaseb, but be sure to leave it on her coat for 10 minutes before rinsing well. If her itching continues, you'll need to take her to her vet for an exam to try to get to the bottom of this issue. I hope that everything goes well!

I would worry about mites, either demodex or scabies, ring worm or a bad skin infection. If it is a skin infection the Vet will likely prescribe a medicated shampoo and antibiotics. If he has mites they will prescribe medications. As of now I would just wait for the exam, I would say bathe him but it would be ideal for the Vet to see his skin as is. Try to feed him some boiled chicken or watered down canned puppy food. Good luck!

That sign could be related to a superficial skin infection (bacterial or yeast). Usually a medicated antibacterial shampoo preparation is enough to sort out the problem. Malaseb shampoo could be a good option in her case. I would recommend to have it prescribed from your local veterinarian, following a check up to confirm clinical suspicion. Hi, thanks for using PetCoach. Unfortunately, something like this is difficult to diagnose with just a photo and still even difficult in person. If all the "normal" things have been tried for common problems, then next step is a biopsy of the skin. Since I am not sure what the other vets gave you for topical treatment it is hard for me to say what you should try. It is good that it is not bothering her but I do think biopsy is a good idea. You must understand that not everything is a quick fix. In the meantime I would use this specific medicated shampoo. Be sure to lather it and let it sit on her for 15 min before rinsing. Skin lesions can be caused by bacterial, parasitic or fungal infection, dietary or environmental allergies or sensitivities, immune system disorders, or a combination of the above. I recommend making an appointment to have Opehli seen by your veterinarian to help determine the cause of the lesions you’ve noticed and to make sure they are treated appropriately. The vet will likely want to shave the area and look at a sample from the area under the microscope to determine if there is an infection and to figure out what medication is appropriate for treatment. In the meantime, you can bathe Opehli in hypoallergenic shampoo for dogs to clean the area, and put an e-collar (cone) on Opehli to help reduce the risk of licking/scratching at the area, but this will likely not resolve the lesions. The lesion in the picture looks like it could be a "hot spot" , and will not heal if she is able to lick or scratch at it. A vet’s visit would be best to determine whether the yellow scab are from dermatitis/pyoderma which is a fairly common skin infection. A Medicated shampoo such as Malaseb (available on PetCo.com, chewy.com, 1800Petmeds) that contains chlorhexidine and ketoconazole that is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-seborrheal (will help remove greasy flakes) used to shampoo the belly 2-3 times a week for 2-3 weeks, leaving the suds on 5-10 min prior to rinsing for optimal efficacy may be helpful. (Towel dry but never use a hair dryer on a puppy to avoid burns.) An in person physical exam would still be advisable as other skin conditions such as ringworm can possibly present as yellow flakes and would likely require more than Malaseb shampoo to treat. Hello! A picture of the lesion would help us give more helpful input. However, if Shiloh's skin is flaky and itchy, it could be a number of things, including superficial pyoderma, demodicosis, sarcoptes, yeast dermatitis, and ringworm. It is difficult to narrow down the causes without doing an exam on her or at least seeing the lesions, but it is very likely some sort of infection (whether bacterial, yeast, or parasitic) so I do recommend bringing Shiloh to the vet. Your vet will be able to determine the cause, and Shiloh will likely need prescription medication (antibiotics, antifungals, or anti-parasite, along with possible medicated shampoo) to clear the issue. Depending on the severity of the issue on her skin, it very likely might not improve without prescription meds, so it is worth having her seen as soon as possible. Additionally, depending on her age, she may have some underlying condition that might be making her skin susceptible to infection, such as allergies or hypothyroidism. I hope this helps.
