My dog has dry, peeling scabs with pink skin underneath. What is it?

Skin lesions can be caused by bacterial, parasitic or fungal infection, dietary or environmental allergies or sensitivities, immune system disorders, or a combination of the above. I recommend making an appointment to have Opehli seen by your veterinarian to help determine the cause of the lesions you’ve noticed and to make sure they are treated appropriately. The vet will likely want to shave the area and look at a sample from the area under the microscope to determine if there is an infection and to figure out what medication is appropriate for treatment. In the meantime, you can bathe Opehli in hypoallergenic shampoo for dogs to clean the area, and put an e-collar (cone) on Opehli to help reduce the risk of licking/scratching at the area, but this will likely not resolve the lesions. The lesion in the picture looks like it could be a "hot spot" , and will not heal if she is able to lick or scratch at it. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Delaware. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian as your at home has not resolved the issue. Scabs typically represent a skin infection. Unfortunately, there can be many causes. She could be experiencing a bacterial or yeast infection. She could also have fleas, mites or allergies. The veterinarian will ask detailed questions about her lifestyle, any previous skin disease and diet. Then she will be thoroughly examined. Skin tests may help her doctor reach a diagnosis. Based on these results, treatment can be prescribed. In the meantime, I would bathe her with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula. This can help to soothe the skin. I suspect she will need prescription medications to fully heal though. I hope this information helps!

This looks like moist dermatitis, a localized infection that usually occurs because of excessive licking/chewing in the area. Typically these need to be treated with oral antibiotics and the cause of the itch should be addressed and treated as well. I would recommend taking your dog in to be examined by your vet so the proper treatment can be initiated. In the meantime, you can try cleaning the area with dilute hydrogen peroxide and applying an antibiotic ointment on it to prevent further infection. I hope this helps. It's hard to know the cause of those marks without a physical exam to look for other clues. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. Also protect the area from trauma by having him wear an elizabethan collar at all times if he is trying to scratch or rub the area. If they do not start improving after 1 week or if they start getting worse, have him examined by the veterinarian. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.

From your description, it sounds as though Archie may have an allergy of skin infection. I would recommend starting the below products and if the skin condition worsens or does not improve, I would have a veterinarian examine the area so that further testing can be done to help determine what the cause could be. The skin is unhealthy for some reason. This is usually caused by some irritation of the skin. The skin is most commonly irritated from allergies, fleas, mites, or inappropriate bathing. The irritation can then cause the skin to get infected with yeast and bacteria. The best thing you can do now is give a bath with a medicated dog shampoo (you can find this at the pet store). Follow the shampoo with an oatmeal or aloe conditioner labeled for dogs. Repeat the bath every other day for two weeks. If that's helping, then repeat the bath every week for a month. If all is good after that, then she should be OK to have a once monthly bath with normal dog shampoo. If the bath is not helping, or she's getting worse, then she needs to go to the vet. The vet will be able to determine if something else is wrong and if further treatment is needed.

I would also recommend welactin omega 3 fish oil, essential 6 spot on by dermoscent and malacetic conditioning spray.
