My puppy has a broken leg and is bleeding. What to do until vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

A friend is living in Costa Rica, teaching English and she arrived at a friend's house last night and they had a hurt puppy. They think the back left leg is broken at the hip. She's also bleeding from her vagina. They believe she's about 5-6 weeks old...does that mean she's bleeding internally? What can they do to make her more comfortable until the vet opens?

Poor Baby! If you believe her leg is broken than you should restrict her activity and keep her quiet until she can be seen by a vet. As for the bleeding, she may have some internal injuries from whatever cause her leg injury. Hopefully, with rest the bleeding will stop. Your vet can do a complete physical examination to determine the extent of her injuries and take xrays, if needed, to determine the best way to treat. If there is an emergency vet open than it would be a good idea to have her seen right away, especially if she seems to be in a lot if pain.
