My puppy has bloody stool. Can she still get parvo after vaccines?

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 13 days old | 32 lbs

Can my puppy still get parvo? She had been vaccinated with DHPPI 3X she had diarrhea at 8weeks she was tested for parvo it was negative then she had giardia about a month ago and tested with giardia again it was negative now she had a bloody stool can it be the giardia or she still needs to be tested for parvo?

I would recommend to test Luna again for Parvo but hopefully it is giardia, worms or bacterial over growth. Luna's vaccines do give her protection but she will need 1 more round done 2-4 weeks after the last vaccine. We finish the vaccine series at 4 months old as that is when the puppy's immune system is fully mature. Get her in to the vet today and have her checked. Best of luck. I hope this is helpful. One other comment. Please make sure that all pets (dogs) who have been exposed get a booster parvo vaccination. Also, make sure that the other puppy is dewormed and vaccinated. The healthier the puppy, the healthier the immune system. Good luck

Hello, and thanks for your question. If possible, I would keep your pups separated until both are symptom free for 2 weeks. If there is the possibility of parvovirus, that can continue to be shed in the stool several weeks after symptoms resolve. It is worth the inconvenience to taking the extra precaution, and give them a bit more time for their immune systems to respond to the most recent vaccination.

Many things can cause diarrhea from Parvo to parasites to bacterial over growth. Since she has not yet been vaccinated, the concern for Parvo is higher. This virus is very easy to spread and can even spread on your shoes.
I recommend to have Nova seen by her veterinarian. Testing for Parvo is straight forward. Make sure she drinks lots of water and you can feed her boiled plain white meat chicken and boiled white rice. This is a bland diet and will decrease the work load on the cells. Parvo tends to progress quickly and the pups will get very lethargic, begin vomiting and the stool may become bloody. Treatment needs to be aggressive and begin early. Hopefully it’s something much less serious.

It very well could be parvo. I suggest you get her to your vet ASAP for an exam and testing. You really need to know if it is parvo or not. Either way, your vet will help you determine the cause of the bloody diarrhea and give you treatment options. Then, once this diarrhea is cleared up you can get her started on her vaccines. This could still be from the parvo. Puppies can have abnormal stool on and off for up to a month after surviving the disease. If that’s not the case, often a prescription strength high fiber or hydrolyzed protein diet will help. There are some cases that will not respond to diet, and at that point your vet can discuss referral to an internist, further testing, or medications like Tylan powder to help. Why is my puppy pooping milky substance with blood after deworming?

Poor Luna! I can definitely understand being worried - it's always scary to see blood or other abnormalities in your dog's stool. The good news is, if she is eating and drinking normally, active, and not vomiting, it's extremely unlikely that she would have parvo or any other serious illness - puppies with parvo are usually very lethargic, not eating, and vomiting frequently. So it doesn't sound like this is likely to be an issue with Luna :) There are lots of things that could cause a milky substance like this with some traces of blood. Colitis, or irritation in the large intestine, can sometimes cause mucus with streaks or flecks of blood to be seen in the stool. This could also occur due to eating something she shouldn't have, or with a minor intestinal infection of some kind. She could also potentially have an infection in her anal glands, which are two scent glands located on either side of the rectum. If she is acting normal apart from this, it's not likely to be an emergency - but if the problem continues, it would be best to call your regular vet or take Luna in for a recheck exam to make sure that everything is okay.

When can I stop worrying about my puppy catching parvo after shots?

Raven is a cutie! It sounds like you are taking the appropriate precautions which is good. Her final set of vaccines will happen between 16 - 18 weeks of age. At her next appointment, discuss the vaccine schedule with her doctor. Vaccines take about a week to take effect and she will not be fully protected until after the last set. Collect the vomit in a baggie and call the vet tomorrow. They may want to see her or they may recommend and drop it off to have them examine it. Puppies can vomit up rounds worms which dewormers are highly effective against. I hope this helps!

My dog is lethargic, not eating, and has bloody stool. What to do?

Poor Luna! She could have an infection (parvo, etc) or a parasite. Since she has bloody stool and is lethargic, she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat. Your vet can test a stool sample to help diagnose and then prescribe medications to treat the problem. She might also need some fluids to prevent dehydration. Hope she gets better soon!

Why do my rescued puppies still have bloody diarrhea after a month?

I would be concerned with Parvovirus which is highly contagious and often fatal if not properly treated. Given the duration of thee symptoms, however, it seems less likely. I would want to ensure, once well, they get at least 3 DAP vaccines 3-4 weeks apart, plus rabies. Sometimes I will see blood in diarrhea from hemorrhoids from straining against soft stool. In this case, treatment for the underlying cause of the diarrhea will be needed. This could include some Metronidazole, a probiotic, and further deworming. In these cases it is usually a small amount of blood whereas with Parvo it is a large amount of very bloody, foul smelling stool.
