Puppy has blood/mucus in poop, acting normal. Is coccidia treatment working?

It is not typical for a puppy to totally lose their appetite from Coccidia, especially when you've already started treatment, and puppies can go downhill quickly if they won't eat or drink anything. I recommend calling your vet and letting them know if you can't entice him to eat even canned food. You can also try offering a little white rice and cooked chicken breast to see if that triggers his appetite. Depending on the diagnostics that were done initially your vet may have follow-up recommendations such as bloodwork or x-rays to make sure nothing else is going on. I hope this helps!

If your dog is not having diarrhea, then I would consider her a subclinical carrier. I would recommend treating her, however, as she is young with an inadequate immune system. Additionally, she can spread it to other dogs via her feces. The treatment is quite easy; a 5 day course of Albon. The dogs usually like the taste of it, and it is once a day only.

Since he is a poop eater he could have eaten rabbit or deer poop and the coccidia isn't the dog kind. If that is the case we do not treat it. Otherwise I do not think the metronidazole will get the coccidia but we can see. Recheck a stool in 1 month and have him poop in one location and immediately pick it up. Walk him on a leash to prevent stool eating. Otherwise the following antibiotics get coccidia: Primor or other sulfa drugs, Doxycycline, Minocycline, Chloramphenicol, Ponazuril, and Amprolium Good luck!

It can be normal to have periods of explosive diarrhea or multiple defecation’s for up to seven days after the treatment starts. My advice is as follows: As long as he continues to eat normally, drink normally, play, and not vomit, I would continue with the treatment without going back to the vet. If he seems lethargic or sick or he just does not seem himself, however, I would take him back to the vet or call the vet as soon as possible to get a consultation. If you decide to keep him at home and continue the treatment, the diarrhea and related side effects of the medications should be gone by 7 to 10 days after the treatment began. Hi! I would say that it is likely ok. Sometimes it takes a bit longer to see results. If it is just soft and Snowball is otherwise fine, I would just give it a few days before getting concerned. Keep in mind that metronidazole is not always a curative medication for diarrhea but rather an antibiotic with anti-inflammatory properties that help with colitis. This means that it will not treat an underlying disease every time. Perhaps try a few days on a bland diet mostly composed of boiled chicken or turkey and rice. If no resolution within a few days, it may be appropriate to start her on a probiotic or try a different medication such as Tylosin. Best of luck with her!

If a fecal test was not performed, then one should definitely be done to see if there even is an intestinal parasite responsible for the diarrhea. There are many other intestinal parasites that can cause diarrhea and Albon does not treat them all. I would recommend having a fecal sample from Koda tested to see what the possible causes of the diarrhea. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. I would also recommend initiating a bland diet of chicken and rice and adding in a probiotic such as Purina Fortiflora. Sometimes a second course of dewormer is needed or a different dewormer is needed for treatment. With parasites, inflammation can result leading to diarrhea and soft stool and sometimes a bland diet or sensitive stomach is needed short term. I hope this helps!
