My puppy still has diarrhea after Albon. What could be the cause?

It is advised to have a veterinarian perform a decal exam to try to pinpoint the cause of diarrhea. Albion is a reasonable option given the presence of specific parasites. However, if the diarrhea is caused by bacterial overgrowth or different parasites, then you’d need another medication. So it’s always best to give any medication under the direction of a veterinarian.

As long as Bobo is eating and drinking, playful, and overall acting normal, I wouldn't be worried at all :) Coccidia can take a while to clear up in some cases, up to 10-14 days after starting Albon. The Flagyl should also help, but it often takes at least 48 hours to begin having any effect. So as long as your puppy is acting fine, I would just continue the medication as directed for the full course of treatment. If his stool is still runny once he has completed all of his medication, take him back to your vet for a recheck. If he still has coccidia at that point, he may need treatment with a different drug such as ponazuril to clear the infection.

It is not typical for a puppy to totally lose their appetite from Coccidia, especially when you've already started treatment, and puppies can go downhill quickly if they won't eat or drink anything. I recommend calling your vet and letting them know if you can't entice him to eat even canned food. You can also try offering a little white rice and cooked chicken breast to see if that triggers his appetite. Depending on the diagnostics that were done initially your vet may have follow-up recommendations such as bloodwork or x-rays to make sure nothing else is going on. I hope this helps!

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. The albon is for treatment of coccidia and will not treat a UTI. Was the UTI confirmed? It is unusual to see such a young dog get a UTI. I would have the urine tested if it has not been tested already. An antibiotic such as clavamox would be used to treat the infection. Alfie could have a parasite, infection, inflammatory bowel disease, hyperthyroidism, liver/kidney disease, etc. Since it has been a week, it would be a good idea to have full blood work, fecal test, and x-rays done to rule out potential causes. I would also recommend switching to a hypoallergenic diet, like d/d, and see if that helps. A medication called Proviable KP may also help. If your vet didn't already prescribe Metronidazole (Flagyl) than that could be tried, too. If the diarrhea persists than an intestinal biopsy may be needed.

They may refill the medication so that you have enough for the low dose for the 9 days. Albon is a very safe drug so you should not have to worry about toxicity. I hope this information helps!

With a normal stool sample and blood panel, the next steps are experimenting with diet - specifically a hypoallergenic prescription diet (such as Royal Canin Ultamino, which is definitely the most expensive option, but also the one that seems to work best in diagnosing food allergies. It takes eating ONLY the prescription food for about a month to see if it helps, and then if it does help you can certainly experiment with less expensive foods. If you she would having signs of food allergy you'd need to do a full 3 months, but for intestinal issues, you should see a response in just a couple weeks) OR a high fiber/easily digestible diet (such as Hills Fiber Response EN). Some dogs need continual probiotics to keep normal stool. Treating any underlying anxiety (if present) can also help. Finally, a gut biopsy, which is much more invasive and costly can be done. Since she isn't yet spayed, I would consider doing a gut biopsy when/if she is spayed because that would be minimal additional expense or trauma for her while she's already have an abdominal surgery.
