My spayed 7-month puppy has blood in her pee. Is it serious?

It is not normal for blood to be present in a dog's urine, although it is possible to get a false positive on a urine dipstick. I would recommend having a veterinarian perform a microscopic examination of a urine sample. A urinary tract infection would be the most common cause of blood in the urine of a young dog.

I see what you mean in the picture provided, it looks like there is some blood there on the wee wee pad. I also see that Annie isn't spayed, so this could mean that she is going into heat for the first time. She is a small breed dog at seven months of age, and that age is when that can happen for the first time in small breed dogs. The other possibility is that she has a UTI, but I can't say for certain without seeing her in person. I would have her seen by a vet to determine if she is in heat or if she has UTI. Until she sees the vet, do not take her in public and do not let her be alone with any intact males. It is never recommended to mate a female dog during her first heat. I hope this helps.

It absolutely could be a bladder infection, and although they tend to be a bit unusual in puppies they can happen. Testing is relatively straightforward including typically a urinalysis will make the diagnosis but often the vet will recommend a urine culture to ensure that the appropriate antibiotic is being used. At 3 months of age I would also consider some imaging (x-rays with contrast or ultrasound) to rule out congenital (present from birth) anatomical issues that could be contributing to urinary issues.

She can have a urinary tract infection, bladder stones, a kidney issue or even a bladder mass. Blood in the urine is never normal, even if it only occurs intermittently. Likewise, it’s unusual for Tilly to experience so much inconsistency in her urination habits. Some young female dogs can have recessed or hooded vulvas, which can make them more prone to developing urinary tract infections. However, since Tilly’s urine has twice not shown evidence of infection, it sounds as though it’s time to look in a different direction. I would start by asking your vet if they can take x-rays of her abdomen to check for evidence of bladder stones. The crystals associated with bladder stones often show up on a urinalysis (I’m assuming that’s what was done with her urine samples), but not always. If the X-rays are clear, your next step may be an ultrasound of her bladder with a veterinary radiologist to check for any other abnormalities. Diarrhea can be the result of an intestinal infection, dietary indiscretion (eating something that upset her gastrointestinal tract), inflammation or even stress.
