My new puppy has a bleeding paw wound and a lump. What should I do?

Oh no, poor Coby! He could have a foreign body in his paw causing the bump, bleeding, and his licking it raw. It sounds like you've done a good job of covering it tonight, and I would put an Ecollar on him to keep him from licking at it. I will put a link below on how to make an Ecollar at home. Poor girl. Yes I would recommend taking her to the vet for this bleeding mass. Often times masses on young dogs are histiocytomas (benign tumors) and can spontaneously regress within 2-4 weeks. However getting this cleaned properly and a short course of anti-inflammatory medication, antibiotics and a temporary bandage are likely needed to help manage this wound in the meantime. Also, you can clean the dried blood and dirt with boiled, warm water or antiseptic solution (4% chlorhexidine works best). Once your local vets are open again, you should get Toby seen by them. The growth does not look nasty but if it is getting bigger, bleeding or bothering your dog, surgical removal should be discussed.

The veterinarian will use a small needle to collect a sample of cells to evaluate under the microscope. This will help to determine the type of mass and guide treatment. A histiocytoma is a common mass on the limb of a young dog. This is a benign growth. However, the outward appearance is the same as a cancerous growth known as a mast cell tumor. Toby may need x-rays to diagnose what is going on with his foot. That is a very odd lump. If he had fractures to the small bones in this region, then they may have healed improperly and caused the lump you see. It is also possible that there is on-going inflammation in that area that could benefit from medications. There is also a small possibility of a tumor in that area. Your vet should be able to figure out what is going on. If it is not cancerous, there are several treatments you could try before going to surgery, including anti-inflammatory medications, glucosamine supplements, Adequan injections, acupuncture, or physical therapy. But first, we need to figure out what is the exact process of the injury so that the appropriate treatment can be started.
