Why is my new puppy biting, causing a rash, and itching constantly?

This is probably caused by an allergic reaction. first of all make sure you de-flea Jesse regularly every month with a high quality spot on (ex. Advantage) as fleas are by far the most common reason for these reactions. If the fleas are not the problem, it could be an allergic reaction to food or an environmental factor. this is more complicated to treat and will sometimes require medications such as Steroids, anti histamines or cyclosporin in order to stop the allergy.

This coulid have been a bug bite that is still irritating her. She could also be having an allergic reaction to something her skin came in contact with. If she is licking constantly I would recommend taking her in to your vet for allergy medication to stop the itch. If she continues the lick it, the area will become more raw, irritated and possible infected. Best to take her in to have this treated since there are no effective allergy medications available over the counter for itching to this degree. I hope that Skye's skin improves soon. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. This may also be mange and usually this is differentiated on a physical exam and basic cytology. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

At her age I would be concerned she has mange (scabies) due to the itching and locations. It is hard to find and actually mite on them but very easy to treat just to be safe. Some puppies get a puppy pyoderma which is little pustules and bumps on their bellies. Most out grow this but few need antibiotics to help when it occurs. She is young to have allergies but it is not impossible. I would have your vet recheck the skin for mange and do weekly baths to help

That is a rash on Troy. Rashes can develop for many reasons and common causes include fleas, environmental allergies or food allergies. You need to keep Troy from biting at the area as this will make it worse. Make him wear an elizabethan collar any time you are not directly watching him. You can also apply a dab of coconut oil to the area twice daily. Rub it in well and do not allow him to lick it as this may cause his stomach to get upset. Make sure to treat him for fleas as this will eliminate it as a cause. I recommend the tops products such as Nexgard or Simparica. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Marlo. His belly looks very inflamed and is likely itchy. It is always a good idea to take a new puppy to a veterinarian when you first obtain him. He will need to be examined, started on his vaccinations and deworming. The rash can be addressed as well. It could be a mild allergic reaction, impetigo or even an overgrowth of a mite known as Demodex. The veterinarian will guide you as far as any testing or treatment needed. It sounds like you have tried some good options so far - but since oatmeal baths, topical sprays, and changing foods have not helped, it's definitely time to see a vet. There are quite a few skin problems that can cause a rash with excessive itching like this, including allergies, a bacterial or fungal skin infection, or skin mites (mange). Prescription medication such as a steroid and/or antibiotic is generally needed to treat these problems, which is why a vet visit is essential. Your vet can do some simple skin tests to help diagnose the problem and get Hank started on appropriate medication to treat it.
