My puppy has bad smelling gas and loose stool. When to see a vet?

Without seeing Diesel it is hard to say. I would first make sure he is intestinal parasite free. There a several different parasites and there is not one deworming medicine that treats them all. I recommend bringing a stool sample to your vet to look at under the microscope. Otherwise the issues could be coming from his food. Make sure you are feeding a high quality puppy food like Iams, Science Diet/Hills, or Purina One. Good luck and kisses to Diesel!

Diarrhea is not uncommon in puppies and there are numerous possible causes, including things like an upset GI tract due to a change in diet or stress, intestinal parasites such as worms or protozoal organisms like Giardia or Coccidia, or more serious causes such as bacterial infection or parvo virus. If Jake is having any vomiting or seems weak/lethargic we would be concerned about parvo virus and he should go to the vet right away for testing and treatment. If Jake is eating normally with no vomiting and a good energy level, he should see a vet for an exam as soon as you can get an appointment but it isn't an emergency situation, and in the meantime you can start a probiotic which you can find at many pet stores or your vet's office. If it was done on his first visit, it may be repeated or additional tests recommended. Depending on his results, medication will likely be prescribed. A diet change to a prescription low fat diet may be beneficial as well. I typically do not recommend extended fasting on puppies as is common in adults with diarrhea. He is growing and needs to eat. Congratulations on your new puppy! it is very common for puppies to carry parasites or infections. The most common ones are giardia, coccidia, intestinal worms or viruses like Parvo. I cannot speak to what are the most likely illnesses seen in the Philippines as I have worked only in the US and UK - but I do recommend taking her to the vet as soon as theyre open to have tests done (take a fecal sample with you) and they will determine what type of treatment is needed. The most likely tests would be a Parvo test, +- blood test, a fecal float for parasites and a giardia test.

Most over the counter dewormer will not treat coccidia or giardia which can cause foul, loose stools. There are some malabsorption disorders or inflammatory diseases that can also do this. In many cases anti-diarrheal medications can make things worse by slowing down the GI tract but not treating the underlying problem.

I am sorry to hear about your puppy! I would recommend scheduling an examination at a veterinarian for Bolt and bringing a sample of the stool with you. One of the most common causes of diarrhea in puppies is intestinal parasites such as roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms, as well as Coccidia and Giardia. We don't normally see the parasites with the naked eye, so tests in the vet clinic must be done to test for the parasites. If your puppy becomes lethargic, starts vomiting, or has bloody diarrhea these can be signs of a virus called Parvovirus and the puppy should be seen by the vet right away.

An upset stomach is a common problem with puppies and is usually self-limiting (will go away on its own). It may not be serious right now, but it's always possible that it could be the start of something serious. If Jack has any of the following, then he should see a vet: 1) Blood in diarrhea 2) Very watery diarrhea 3) Starts acting very depressed 4) Stops eating or drinking for longer than 24 hours. 5) Diarrhea lasts longer than three days. You can try feeding bland food (boneless chicken and rice is good). Feed small portions (1/4 cup or less) three times a day. Ensure fresh, clean water is always available.
