My puppy ate something, won't eat, and is trying to vomit. What to do?

Since last night was Halloween, think about if there's anything she could have eaten that she shouldn't have and take her to the vet ASAP if you realize your chocolate stash or your entire pan of bacon wrapped something or anothers from the potluck is missing. If you can't think of anything she ate, it's generally ok to wait 24 hours to see if she get back on her food naturally. Sometimes something goes wrong in the gut and we don't know why but it resolves quickly. If she's not back to normal in 24 hours, or has any vomiting or diarrhea in the mean time, she needs to go to her vet for evaluation and supportive care. I’m sorry to hear about Autumn! If there is any swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, you should take her tonight- in fact now- as this could be a sign of severe allergic reaction. The sniffing the food but not actually eating it could be a sign of nausea rather than inability to swallow. If there is vomiting - especially more than twice- you should go in tonight. If she is drinking and urinating and just sort of panting and “off”, it can probably wait till the morning. I see things like this with pain/injury, spider bite, anxiety, mild nausea or tummy upset, and other things. Obviously if you see collapse, seizures, or difficulty breathing, see the emergency vet immediately. Best Of luck to you and Autumn!

This is definitely concerning - if your pup is not current on her booster vaccines, I would be very worried that she may have parvo. She may also have an upset stomach due to something she has eaten. If she is acting normal otherwise, you can try withholding food for the next 12 hours to help settle her stomach, then offer some plain boiled chicken and white rice. If she continues to vomit even though you aren't feeding her, or if she is acting lethargic or having any other symptoms, then I would recommend having her seen tonight by an emergency vet if possible as she may have a serious problem.

Unfortunately, those are very general signs of illness that can be a part of a lot of different issues. Parasites, illness, obstructions, infections, etc can all be potential causes behind vomiting and refusal to eat. If she's only vomited once or twice, you can try a bland meal of boiled rice and chicken to try and settle her stomach, however if she keeps vomiting, is refusing all food, is very lethargic, or seems painful or in distress, it is best to seek veterinary care ASAP.

Poor girl. Unfortunately my major concern here is that Winnie may have a foreign body. I would highly recommend fasting her for 6hrs and then offer her a small portion of boiled plain chicken or lean ground turkey and white rice and small amounts of non-flavored Pedialyte to keep her hydrated until you can get her seen by your vet. The vet needs to do a complete physical examination and likely will recommend x-rays if a foreign body ingestion is suspected. Best case scenario is that Winnie has a really upset stomach from something she ingested and not a true obstruction. However, the next best thing is to get her seen by your vet as soon as they are open in the morning. I do hope that Winnie feels better soon! Best of luck and take care

This could be a number of things - parasites, a bacterial or viral GI infection, or even an intestinal blockage. At 2.5 months of age, Gus is especially at risk for parvovirus, a serious GI infection. We always worry about fluid loss in young puppies, so I would recommend getting him to a vet ASAP, to diagnose the cause of the vomiting, and start appropriate therapy.
