My puppy ate a plastic sauce packet. Should I go to the vet now?

Hi, if the wrapper has been thorn into pieces it will probably pass through his gastro intestinal tract together with other food. If it was a large piece swollowed as whole, there is the risk of obstruction and you need to monitor him closely for any vomiting or diarrhoea or straining to go to the toilet or abdominal pain. As long as he is eating and drinking normally, I would not be concerned. If he begins to vomit or loses his appetite, then I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at him and perform some diagnostic testing such as x-rays to help rule out a foreign body obstruction from the plastic. If it has been less than an hour since your pet ate it, you can induce vomiting by giving an oral dose of hydrogen peroxide, about 1 cc per pound. One tablespoon is about 5 cc. A turkey baster will work if you don't have a syringe. Longer than an hour and it will have already moved into the intestines. If it's too late to get him to vomit, you can reasonably expect diarrhea at least. I would withhold food for 12-24 hours to give his gut a chance to rest after this very rich meal. When you start feeding him, only give him a few pieces of kibble at a time, every 30 minutes or so, until he has had his usual meal. If at any time he develops lethargy, fever, repeated vomiting, abdominal pain, or any other adverse symptoms, he should be seen by your vet right away. The plastic could cause a blockage that can seriously damage his intestines.

Hello. I am so sorry that Aura bit you, I guess he really wanted the sauce packet. It the packet was the size of the ones you get at fast food places, then it should pass with no problems, rubber band & all. Just watch for any lethargy, vomiting or inappetence. If he eats it and keeps it down, you can offer him more in 2-3 hrs. However, if he refuses to eat, vomits or if he is not passing stools as normal, you should take him to your local vets for an appointment.

Hi there! As long as Nova is acting normal, I wouldn't be concerned. It's likely that he threw up the packet because it couldn't be digested and was causing some irritation to his stomach. I'm not sure what specific kind of packet it was (ketchup, mustard, mayo, etc.?) but most common condiments are not toxic to dogs and should not cause any serious problems.

No do not make him vomit. The sharp pieces can do damage coming back up, as well as you can get esophageal irritation if you use hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting. I recommend feeding moistened kibble to help surround the pieces so hopefully they will pass without causing a problem. This can be serious though so if there is discomfort, no poop, or not eating I recommend taking an X-ray tomorrow see where the pieces are in the intestinal tract. If Jose is not painful they can take a series of X-rays over time to see if the pieces are moving. If they get stuck in one place then surgical removal will be needed.
