My puppy ate a dead mouse. Does she need a vet or medication?

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Female | unspayed | 8 months and 12 days old | 7 lbs

I found my dog in the backyard with a dead mouse in it's mouth. Do I need to do anything like get her some medication or take her to a vet? She is 8 months old and up to date on all of her shots.

There are some diseases that can be transmitted from a mouse to a dog, but it's not that common. Dogs eat rodents and birds all the time and rarely have any problems. I would just make sure that she received a leptospirosis vaccine and that she gets a dewormed in the next month or two.

Otherwise, she should be fine. If she shows any signs of illness, then it would be worth a visit to the vet, but it's not necessary to rush to the vet anytime soon.

In general, mice do not carry the diseases that we vaccinate for. The exception is that they can shed Leptospirosis in their urine, so I would be sure to mention that to your veterinarian when you are discussing which vaccinations are appropriate for Kai. The other thing to be concerned about is if there is any possibility that the mouse had eaten any rat poisoning. If Kai has any vomiting, loss of appetite, or lethargy, be sure to have your veterinarian examine him right away to be safe.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear that Lily got into a dead mouse. More than likely she will be ok but whenever dogs or cats ingest strange or odd things like this, there is always potential for intestinal and stomach upset to occur. I would watch for nausea, drooling, vomiting, and/or diarrhea. If any of these signs develop and they persist, I would advise having your vet evaluate her and treat her for dietary indiscretion. She may need drugs for vomiting/nausea and/or diarrhea. Good luck with Lily. I hope nothing comes of it.

That's good that you got the mouse out of her mouth so quickly. Mice typically transmit worms, fleas/ticks and they can transmit leptospirosis and other bacteria depending on the local prevalence. I recommend to make sure Callie is up to date on her flea, heartworm and intestinal parasite prevention. Then call your veterinarian and tell them what happened. They will know if there are any bacterial infections in your region of concern and will recommend preventive treatment if needed. My dog bit a mouse but didn't eat it. Does he need a vet checkup?

It wouldn't hurt to get a fecal done in the next few months, or just preventively deworm Bandit to ensure there aren't any parasites transmitted. Keeping him up to date on flea and tick meds is also a good idea since mice can transmit these parasites as well. Otherwise, I would just keep an eye on him and watch for any issues such as diarrhea, stomach upset, visible worms in stool, or itching and scratching. If you notice any other strange symptoms, or feel he needs an update on any boosters sooner, contacting your vet is best.

My puppy had a dead rat in her mouth. Should I worry?

Oh no! While it's not good Thalia had a dead rat in her mouth, she's a very good girl for dropping it right away. If she did not chew on the rat, eat part of the rat, and if there was no blood, then the likelihood that she picked up any disease from the rat is very low. The biggest concern would be if she ate part of it, chewed on it, or if you saw any blood from it in her mouth. If any of those scenarios apply, then yes, I would take her into your asap. Should the rat appear intact, there are no signs she chewed on it, and she was simply carrying it, I would wash her mouth out with water very well (use gloves to be safe!), and that should be fine. To be safe, you can get her checked out, but just carrying the rat should have no issue. Definitely get her the vaccine on Monday. I hope this helps!

Make sure the ingested animal did not die from rodenticide. If so, it is possible your puppy will suffer secondary exposure and may require veterinary attention. If not, monitor for vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or lethargy. See your vet if you notice any of these signs.
