My 1.5-month-old puppy is anemic and won't eat. What should I do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry that Syzu is so sick! I am most concerned for the PCV of 10, that is a severe anemia. Causes of anemia are blood loss, destruction of the red blood cells (immune or infectious) or bone marrow disease. Even though he is only 3 1/2 cancer is still possible. I would have X-rays done, a slide agglutination ran, infectious disease testing and an ultrasound. Not eating for 3 weeks is very serious and he is likely very debilitated. Loss of appetite can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. This could absolutely be due to anemia given her pale mucous membranes. I recommend that you have Snow evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Possibilities include an immune-mediated hemolytic anemia in which case other immunosuppressive drugs can be used with prednisone or possibly an infectious disease. They would be able to recommend further but reaching out to a specialist would be an option for further tests/recommendations. Hoping for a speedy recovery!

I am quite concerned about the anemia as the level is getting low. I unfortunately do not know what the cause is of the anemia as there are many causes ranging from immune mediated anemia, cancer, hemorrhage, etc. Because I do not have Lucky in front of me and am unable to examine him, I cannot make the most appropriate treatment recommendations. There are no over the counter remedies that will help with this most likely as he most likely needs a further workup to pinpoint where the red blood cells are going. Until then, it is a guessing game. I would recommend trying to get him somewhere where there is a veterinarian so that he can be worked up further. Seeing that your puppy is quite young, it is possible that he is dealing with some infectious disease such as Parvo or Distemper. I would have him examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. At 2 months of age, this has me worried that he may be battling an infection such as Parvo virus. He may also be dehydrated if he is weak and is likely in need of fluid therapy for rehydration. I would recommend having him examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I would have him parvo tested and have his blood tested to see if there are any other abnormalities. Subcutaneous fluids would certainly help him feel better and he may be so dehydrated the IV fluids may be the best option for him. It is difficult to say without examining him to see how severe he is. I hope this helps! Hello. Anemia is generally the result one of three things, 1. excessive bleeding from trauma or internally from a tumor or ulcer, 2. from the inability of bone marrow to produce more red blood cells, or 3. from an increased destruction of red blood cells usually due to an autoimmune disease. Your pet is probably being worked up to discover if any of these things may be the cause. Blood work, x-rays & an ultrasound examination of the chest & abdominal cavities may be necessary to diagnose the anemia.
