What should I watch for after my puppy's first 5-in-1 vaccine?

Puppy's getting sleepy after their shots is a normal reaction to vaccinations. They can also have a low grade fever and/or one bout of vomiting/diarrhea normally that are no cause for concern. The concern arises when your pet is severely lethargic, not eating, non-responsive, pale gums, or excessive vomiting/diarrhea. If you notice any of these symptoms then it is best to take puppy to a vet asap for immediate care, because a mores serious vaccine reaction is occurring at that point.

You can just monitor Ares for any signs of illness such as inappetence, vomiting or diarrhea and have him examined if observed. However, that is unlikely. Normal dog temperature is 99-102.5. The temperature could be elevated due to activity, excitement, inflammation or infection. Typically a vaccine reaction will happen within 24 hours though 48 hours could be possible. Vaccine side effects can sound very scary but they are rare and the protection they provide against disease is worth the risk for most pets (pets with known vaccine reactions may warrant different protocols by their veterinarian). If you notice shes lethargic, vomiting, or having diarrhea, I would contact the vet that gave the vaccines. The dewormer will kill any intestinal parasites she may have. You may see worms pass in her feces. This is normal. You and your family can be around her. I would recommend cleaning up her stools right away, and washing your hands before eating. Kisses to Lucy!

Well, happy early birthday to Toby. Vaccines are something that we give everyday and rarely have side effects, but side effects are certainly a possibility. The most common side effects are a mild fever, mild lethargy and discomfort at the injection site. These are the result of the vaccine stimulating the immune system and typically resolve with a day or two. More severe vaccine reactions can be analphylactic reactions and typically occur very quickly after a vaccine is given (within minutes) and may include hives, facial swelling and trouble breathing. Toby is likely already outside this time frame, so you likely do not need to worry about an anaphylactic reaction.
