My pug puppy's eyes are dark. Is dark sclera normal for pugs?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. In pugs, this is a normal thing to see. There is increased pigmentation (melanin) deposited on the eye. Pugs can develop pigmentary keratitis, in which a dark film develops over the eye itself. This does not cause any pain and unfortunately there is nothing you can do to make this go away or slow down the progression. If the eye becomes irritated, you can use steroid drops. Something that a vet would need to prescribe Dexter after examining him. I hope this helps! This is not normal, the cloudiness is due to swelling and the dark color is likely pigmentation, the eyes response to ongoing irritation and scarring. Please have her assessed to determine the underlying cause such as ulcers, dry eye or inturned eyelids. Urgent treatment is required to relieve pain and restore sight

Thank you for providing the pictures of Piggy they were very helpful! It can be a normal variation from dog to dog on the color of scleras. While yes, they are typically white with some blood vessels present, some dogs may have different concentrations of pigment cells (melanocytes) that can make some sclera darker than the other or even just a portion of it. It will be important to take Piggy to see your veterinarian or an ophthalmologist if you notice him squinting his eye, scratching at it, increased tear production (weepy eye) or you notice that he has any obvious defects on the surface of his eye. These signs usually indicate irritation or damage to the eye and can be quite painful for Piggy or others.

I do not see anything alarming in these photos. If you are worried the darker pigment on the inside corner of the white part of the eye, that can be normal in some breeds. Corneal hyperpigementation is usually a result of chronic rubbing. It usually causes no problems long term. If you notice any redness or mucoid discharge, or if he does not want to keep eye open, then i would have him check by your vet.

I do not really appreciate any problems with the eyes in these photos. His right eye may have more of the sclera (white of the eye) showing at the middle corner area but I would not consider it abnormal. If you are worried I suggest you have him to a local vet for an exam. That way they can use the eye scope (ophthalmoscope) to check the eyes. Eye problems are best diagnosed in person.

Yes this is likely normal for her. As long as she isn't squinting that eye, rubbing it, or having green/yellow discharge from that eye then I wouldn't be concerned. Also the dark brown in her fur is normal tear staining for her breed. I hope this helps.

What you're seeing is likely the small blood vessels of the eye and pigmentation of the cornea. This is typically very normal, but if you are concerned you should take Dunbar to the vet for an ocular exam.
