My pregnant dog has liver disease: What symptoms & is medication safe?

What signs and symptoms should i watch out if my dog shit zu is 2weeks pregnant and has liver problem? Her blood results showed that she has liver problem.. she wasn't taking any medications yet. Is it okay if she takes medications for her liver while she is pregnant?

There is always some risk in medicating a pregnant bitch. Depending on what specific liver disease she has and what medication is recommended, sometime it can be safe to start the medication when they are pregnant and sometimes it is better to wait.

Your vet that diagnosed the liver issue should be able to guide you in making the decision of whether or not you should start Kulet on medication. Or, you can post another question or request a consult and we can help decide what is best for her.

Symptoms of liver disease can be varied and include everything from vomiting and anorexia to jaundice and neurological disorders. If you notice any of these symptoms in Kulet you should take her in to see your vet right away.

There are also other more concerning causes of vomiting in dogs, so if it continues or becomes more frequent, I would take her into see her veterinarian as soon as possible. My senior dog has liver disease. What to expect in the future?

Hi Fonda. I'm sorry Bowser isn't doing well. Liver disease can show a variety of symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, jaundice, blood clotting problems, and fluid in the abdomen. Hopefully the medication and food helps, but if you see any of those signs, have him seen by a vet immediately.

Unless this is a life-threatening reaction, I wouldn't advise using any drugs while she is pregnant. If she develops itching, trouble breathing, pale membranes, vomiting or other signs, I would advise contacting your veterinarian or a local emergency veterinarian for advice. Drug use during pregnancy should be avoided at all costs in my opinion. Maybe trying a hypoallergenic oatmeal shampoo and leaving the lather on her for 10 minutes may help ease the situation. Pregnant dog has eye discharge and is lethargic. Can she take meds?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Indra! Indra needs to be examined by a Vet. She could have a conjunctivitis, uveitis, scratches on her eyes and a fever since she is lethargic. Just because she is pregnant doesn't mean there aren't safe medications to give her. Antibiotic eye drops are safe as are some oral antibiotics. I hope this helps and I would have her seen today by your Vet. I wish Indra a speedy recovery!

Is it safe to give digestive meds to a puppy with a liver shunt?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Malin! I would use any drug or supplement with extreme caution on a puppy with a liver shunt. Drugs are not metabolized appropriately due to the shunt bypassing the liver for filtration. What is best is that Malin be seen by your Vet and treated for the nausea and diarrhea. If there is any suspicion of leptospira infection antibiotics can be possibly given even if pregnant (for example Amoxycillin and clavulanic acid). My pregnant dog is sick, bleeding, and won't eat. Is this normal?

With these symptoms I worry that your dog may have a pyometra instead of being pregnant. Pyometras typically develop around 3-6 weeks after they go into heat and present as bloody discharge, lethargy, abdominal swelling, etc. I would recommend that she is seen by a veterinarian who can perform an ultrasound to make sure she isn't suffering from an infection.
