Is it safe to give digestive meds to a puppy with a liver shunt?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 27 days old | 1.6 lbs

I have an 8 week old puppy with a liver shunt that is having nausea and diarrhea for the past day. Can I give him homeo pet digestive upset to help relieve the symptoms?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Malin!

I would use any drug or supplement with extreme caution on a puppy with a liver shunt. Drugs are not metabolized appropriately due to the shunt bypassing the liver for filtration.

What is best is that Malin be seen by your Vet and treated for the nausea and diarrhea.

I hope this helps and I wish you and Malin the best!
