My pregnant dog ate a toad. Will her unborn puppies be okay?

Cane toads are toxic, they secrete a poison through their skin that can cause severe salivation, shaking, heart arrythmias, vomiting and if they ingest enough even death. I can not find any reports of the toad poison causing dogs to abort if pregnant, though it is possible with any toxin. If she isn't showing any symptoms from licking the toad then I would assume she would be fine. I would recommend rinsing her mouth out for 5 mins with water, regardless if she is showing signs. If she is symptomatic I would take her to the Vet. I would leash walk her when these toads are out to prevent hunting and licking these toxic toads in the future regardless of her pregnancy, I wish you and K the very best! Peita should be just fine! Depending on the type of toad, they can have some toxins on their outer surface that taste awful so predators will spit them out if they try to eat them (which sounds exactly like what happened with Peita). Once the source (i.e. the toad) is removed so is the taste. So you do not need to worry!

I would recommend that you continue to monitor her closely for any signs consistent with a gastrointestinal obstruction such as vomiting, inappetence and abdominal pain. Some toads are poisonious/noxious to dogs. Typically they cause an acute reaction of excessive drooling and foaming at the mouth. This usually resolves within 30-60 minutes. If after this amount of time Samson is still acting abnormal you may want to take him in to the vet to be checked out.

As long as she didn't ingest the toad, she should be fine. That was quick thinking and the correct action. Most often, a good rinsing with cool water will remedy the foaming. If she is not showing any symptoms now, she is likely in the clear.

If it is just a small piece of chocolate, it is not likely to cause any harm to the mom or the babies. There are chocolate toxicity calculators available online where you can input the type of chocolate, the weight consumed, and the weight of the animal to see if the toxicity is significant.
