My puppy ate a frog or toad and is throwing up. Is it an emergency?

Some toads are poisonious/noxious to dogs. Typically they cause an acute reaction of excessive drooling and foaming at the mouth. This usually resolves within 30-60 minutes. If after this amount of time Samson is still acting abnormal you may want to take him in to the vet to be checked out.

If the toad was toxic, you’d see symptoms such as head shaking, severe drooling, and pawing at the mouth and eyes almost immediately. Because it’s been 10 minutes since Max picked up the toad, I would suspect it’s not poisonous. I would not rush him into the ER vet, but keep an eye on him to be safe. Without knowing the type of toad licked, it would be hard to say. If she is showing signs of toxicity such as vomiting, diarrhea, excessive drooling, confusion, etc, it would be best to seek emergency care right away.

Toads in my area of the US can cause similar symptoms, but they do not generally progress to vomiting of blood. I would take Maui to a GP vet or an emergency vet for evaluation. Blood work with a CBC, chemistry, and blood clotting times are a good start at determining what symptoms are affected and what treatments are indicated. There may not be an antidote, but supportive care, treatments, and close monitoring are the next best thing.

Rinse her mouth with cool running water for at least 15 minutes. Keep her head tilted downward to prevent aspiration of water. It is likely there is not enough toxin to cause serious toxicity. Monitor for weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, disorientation or seizures. Treatment is largely symptomatic. See your veterinarian if Shirley develops any of these symptoms.

It is likely thst some of the toxin has entered her system, but hopefully most will have come up with the toad itself. She will lukely be off form a few days and have an upset tummy. If the vet isnt an option all you can do is nurse her, bathe her to try and keep hydration up and just keep a close eye on her.

I'm sorry to hear Duchess may have had contact with a potential toxin. Not all frogs and toads are dangerous to dogs, but the ines that secrete toxins on their backs are. I would rinse her mouth out immediately with copious amounts of water, and then contact your regular veterinarian or local poison control to see if further action and decontamination is required.
